im new here. my hubby purchased a king charles cavalier last wednesday, she is 8 weeks old and named her sophie. the first 2 days she had diarreah whch i new was normal, until firday night her diareah contained blood so i rang the breeder who told me that was normal and told me to starve her for 24 hours. the feed her scrambled eggs for 2 days then chicken. early saturday morning she had diarreah 5 times in an hour which squirted out like water. i rang the breeder again, this time spoke his wife who just replied oh just do what my husband told you. by this time i got worried as it looks like she had lost weight. i then decided to call the emrgency vet on sunday afternoon, they kept her in for 2 days .on a drip and antibiotics. tueday afternoon we picked her up from the vets, she still is on a course of antibiotics for the next couple of days and pro kolin, feeding her on chicken. she seems ok inherself wagging her tail and bouncing around and always pleased to see you. but she still has diarreah not so ruuny but more like a cows pat. i can seem to get rid of the diarreah, any suggestions, i am really worried about her evethough i just had for 7 days now i love her to bits.

If there is no improvement in your new bundle of joy and are worried i would be calling the vets again, though depending on how ill she really was would depend on how long it would be for her to get better, did the vet offer any advice on that.
I would personally be giving the idea of calling the breeder again the heave ho, blood in the stool in such a young pup is not right and telling you to starve the poor thing and to say it was normal?? not good, sorry not what i would be doing unless the vets advised it.

Is this breeder been highly recommended to you?

It really ISN'T normal for a new puppy to have diarrhoea. Has she been wormed, and is she on the same food she was used to with the breeder or did you change? There can be all sorts of reasons for diarrhoea, like internal parasites, virus infections, sudden food change, etc, but really the poo should be pretty good by now if she's just on chicken. I'd get back to the vet and ask, maybe do a stool sample to find out what's going on. I hope the pup was sold with puppy insurance so that you haven't had to pay all this yourself! I have to say it doesn't sound like a very good breeder at all. :( I hope things will soon be better!

I'm sorry that your first post has to be one looking for advice on your new puppy - early days are so exciting but don't need this type of climax :(

Anyway, onto pupster!  At least she still has meds from your vet to work on any bacterial problems however as we have a bank holiday w/e fast approaching I'd suggest that since the little one is still having very loose stools (and as a result losing much needed hydration) that you take her back to your vet tomorrow for an update and his/her further advice.

Pups can get upset tums when they go to new homes through the stress of leaving mum, siblings, familiar surroundings etc and if any great distance from the breeder's premises the water supply may be totally different and this can affect their system too.  That said, this little one doesn't sound as though this has been a classic case of normal 'changes' in pups first few days but hopefully the ABs will have already started to kick in and kick out any bug this little mite may have picked up.

Over feeding can also very easily upset tiny tums so ensure that when you're offering food it's only tiny amounts, especially since her tummy and bowels will probably be easily upset just now.  The pro-kolin should help this settle of course but again, vet knows best.

When at the vet I'd also suggest asking for some rehydration sachets - these are powders containing vital minerals, salts, etc and can be added to your pup's drinking water to help keep her hydrated if this problem is likely to last a few days more. (Always handy to have some in anyway :) )

Also to note that when my boy had an upset stomach they refused to give him AB as they said this can cause very loose stools to continue, they have taken a fecal sample and this has been sent off before they will look to try and remedy what my boy has been suffering from if anything at all.
So that maybe the reason why he is still loose, but definately call the vets and be seen today before the w/e starts.
