Hi, has anyone's dog had a reaction to Cartrophen injections? My boy had his first a couple of days ago, and is just recovering now. He was groggy looking the first evening, but I woke up the morning after to find him lying in his own vomit, unable to stand! :-( We were unable to see my usual vet that day, but the other chap just said starve him for a day (he wasn't interested in food anyway), and no meds for a couple of days (he's also on thyroid meds). I'm not too keen to continue with the course of treatment, is his reaction likely to improve?

Cartrophen in a different drug, Val. My elderly Dandie, who had a very dodgy digestion, tolerated it very well, AAdams, and we did see a very good response to her pain control. I think it is generally seen as a good alternative to the NSAIDs but I suppose any drug could upset an individual.
My lad had a reaction to Cartrophen - projected vomiting. He only had 1 injection and it started roughly a few hours later. He could not keep even water down and ended up at the emergency vet on the drip - mild dehydration. Anyhow, he was as right as rain on the following day. Vomiting is a side effect of the drug, it's not common but it can happen. In our case, there was no doubt that this was a drug side effect; and he never had Cartrophen again.
Soory to hear about your boy and I hope he is feeling better now. I have used Cartrophen a number of times, successfully and without any side effects. A friend used it for many years on a dog with just about every imaginable problem, including an over active thyroid, and she had no problems. Are you sure the vomitting was caused by the Cartrophen, I know in our area there has been a really nasty bug doing the rounds.
