Topic Dog Boards / General / That Gregg's advert
- By Pinky Date 28.04.09 07:28 UTC
OK, maybe I'm over re-acting but I feel that it is not amusing to imply that because a dog mis-behaves and eats your freshly baked it is OK to send him off to the pound.

There's enough idiots out there that do dispose of their dogs because it chewed the furniture or pinched something it shouldn't or doesn't match the decor of the house or even has the audacity to need excercise.

We don't need companies using the plight of such dogs by way of advertising to sell their bloomin butties.

I didn't see it as sending the dog off to the pound.  The sign on the back of the van says "Doggy Boot Camp" so I took it to mean he was sending him for training.

I found it funny :)

the van actually says doggie boot camp there is no reference to rescue kennels or the pound, but i suppose its down to individual interpretaion?
- By suejaw Date 28.04.09 07:48 UTC
I can see what you mean by this, but to be honest i found it hilarious at the much adoration he puts to his dog and them wham - doggy boot camp!!!- for eating his pie..
- By Pinky Date 28.04.09 07:57 UTC
Yeh OK it's a boot camp, I obviously missed that bit and if I can miss it maybe others could.

Anyway even if it's a boot camp it still implies that the best thing to do with dogs that misbehave is to send 'em' off somewhere to get someone elso to sort out the problem.

Do we have doggy boot camps over here or is that an American thing?

As has been stated it is not sent to the pound.  This is my favourite ad. at the moment and can see me so much in it with the way that I am with my dogs!!

I do feel that people go OTT, it's an advert, it's not real and 99% of people will see this fact.

Also love the new Caeser advert, think the WHWT is gorgeous.

The ones that can read! ;-)

Hmmm is this a subtle dig cos I missed the boot camp sign or are you agreeing that average joe is not the sharpest pencil in the box? ;)

>Hmmm is this a subtle dig cos I missed the boot camp sign

 No, not intended in a rude way at all, I promise! (Just shows how easy it is to mis-phrase a post! My fault entirely!) No, I meant the brighter ones will discuss it with other people (like we are here) and will then look harder at the advert next time. :-)
- By Pinky Date 28.04.09 09:27 UTC
No worries no offence taken

I think perhaps the reason I found the advert so annoying is that at our local rescue they have rec'd back a young Red Setter because it 'pinched a cake' off the kitchen unit

I just felt that the advert sort of implied that dogs could be disposable or sent off somewhere if they mis-behave.

I try that with the kids.  I send them to school every day and the school just keeps sending them back at 4pm :)

:)  Nice idea though!
- By STARRYEYES Date 28.04.09 10:20 UTC
that advert makes me laugh too .

I also luuuuuuuuv the Little Westie in the Cesar add too.

Joe Public will probably think of Dog Borstal -and by Joe Public I include the advert makers here. Non dog people usually don't have a clue how things work. :)

well, all I can say that with a family like that one can only hope that this is the Red Setter's lucky break--he can pinch the odd cake at my house anytime, countersurfing tolerated here! It's my fault if I don't put it away, and anyway my children are very professional countersurfers too. :-)
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 28.04.09 11:34 UTC
(Light dawning 35 years later) So that's what it was all about then...! I got sent to a school 3,000 miles from home--I guess my parents must have figured they were safe.

> well, all I can say that with a family like that one can only hope that this is the Red Setter's lucky break

I think you're right especially as it turns out the people concerned were on their 3rd dog, all returned for minor offences :(  Mind you I have to wonder at the rescue for letting them have three although they have put a block on any more.

As for countersurfing, yep we have it here too, if it aint locked away then it's my fault, there's dogs a cat and hubby to consider :-D
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 28.04.09 20:22 UTC
That's even worse, Pinky--I know rescues are desperate to place dogs in homes, but these people ought to have been blacklisted (if that's the right phrase) so that no other rescue takes them on. Poor boy--hope he goes to a loving home now, he's in our thoughts here tonight.
- By Pinky Date 28.04.09 20:33 UTC
Ironically there were two families wanting him and the wrong ones got him, so on his return the other family was notified that he was back and to the best of my knowledge he's now in a much better home that is well aware of countersurfers and dining room table legs chewers etc etfc :-D
- By bilbobaggins [gb] Date 28.04.09 23:27 UTC
I met a Red Setter called Jelly,, described him perfectly

well thats what training is. You could interpret it that it is a positive message - if your dog misbehaves do somthing about it - get them trained. Far better to see that than to see the dog get smacked or put to sleep.
Although TBH i dont think many people would have even noticed :-)
- By Merlot [gb] Date 29.04.09 14:02 UTC
I don't like the add either...even though it says doggie boot camp the owner throws away the lead!!! Gives the wrong immpression in this day and age with so many "Throw away" items. There are lots of people out there who look on dogs as easily removable for small misdemeners I don't think it should be the but of a joke.

actually the way I see it is, if your dog misbehaves get yourself trained! It's easy to blame the dog, but if I had a dime for every time I heard sometime (yes, me too) give inconsistent commands and confusing signals, I could open up a luxury home for neglected dogs (we're making do with a neglected home for luxury dogs instead :-) )

My neighbour has just rehomed a dog from a Rescue Centre.  It had been rehomed once, but the new owners returned the dog after ONE DAY, becasue it kept trying to bite hubbies toes!

It would have been a positive message if the chap had gone off to training classes with his dog instead of seeing the dog being taken off in the back of the van and chucking the lead away :(
