Topic Dog Boards / General / Help choosing a pet name!
- By CVL Date 27.04.09 10:52 UTC
Hello All,

I am completely stuck choosing a name for my new Labrador puppy - I will hopefully bring him home in less than 2 weeks, and my potential name list is growing, not shrinking!  It'd be awful for Mr. Pupster to come home nameless.  So I thought I'd ask the experts (that means you lot...) to help.

I really like names that could be human names... so on that list I've got Melvin, Troy, Trevor, Wesley, Cyrill (think they're my favourites...)

But then on a completely different theme, I also like Cosmo (like Cosmonaut as his Sire's Russian... and like Cosmo and Dibbs :-D).

Most importantly, it can't be a name that you're always hearing people calling in the park!  So if any of these are really common, please let me know.

I know it's all personal preference, but having chosen the little man, I still think he'd suit any of these!  Never had this trouble before, so any opinions are most welcome!

Thanks,

Clare

Do you know what his registered name is/will be? I like mine to have a connection between their registered and pet names but that is mainly because I show and it's easier for people to know who I'm talking about if there's a connection between the two names :)

Well, I know what the first choice is... not sure if I'm allowed to say in case someone nicks it though!  It's a great KC name, very memorable and strong, but quite a mouthful for training etc.  So I thought I'd just go for something completely different :-)

clare, from your list I like cosmo but how about boris if he is a big bouncing black boris boy?

Nobody liked my first choice for my rottie and I considered quite a few other names that other people like but in the end stuck with oberon and he suits it perfectly.

Our Labs have always been yellow.
We've had the following names
Ben
Neb
Sam
Toby
Bentley
and currently Oscar.

My Auntie has always had black Labs and hers have been
McGinty
Boysee
and currently Charlie

Some very common names i'm afraid.

The sire of our current and my Aunts current is called Bosun.

i should think troy will be increasingly popular with the high school musical phase just now. consider what you will inevitably shorten them to (will melvin end up smelly melly for example lol)

i like wesley from your list :)

I like this name, know a big choc male lab with this name & it suits him perfectly
- By CVL Date 27.04.09 13:38 UTC
Didn't know there was a Troy in High School Musical :-(  I'm obviously not 'down with the kids' or something...  Wesley's certainly a contender, after Wesley from the Princess Bride... but he was blond so perhaps it's not a great match.

and yet was awesome! :)

yes, troy is the male lead so i think you'll probably see a lot of teeny boppers with dogs called troy over the next while

Hi Clare

it's tricky finding that special name but certainly worth taking the time to get what you really like and what best suits your dog :)

Have a look at THIS SITE which has quite literally 1,000s of names to choose from :)

I to went with my GR's kennel club name, they were named after birds of prey so he is Kestral - hence we called him Kez. Which I really love and it is to call when out. My next dog would like to call Otto have no idea why.

My friends has three black labs, Shadow, Storm and the last one is called chance as she thinks is will be her last opportunity to buy a dog.

Good luck
- By CVL Date 27.04.09 16:14 UTC
Otto is a very nice name (I won't pinch it though... promise..)  Some great suggestions everyone, however, I'm still drawn to Cosmo and Melvin... think I've narrowed it to those 2.  I don't fancy anything deep and meaningful really, just personal preference, but I prefer silly names!  Baxter is nice, but I've got a Dexter so it just won't work.  So for the time being the question is:  Cosmo or Melvin?  Answers on a postcard please :-D  I'll change my mind tomorrow though.
- By LJS Date 27.04.09 16:15 UTC
I vote for Cosmo then.
- By clio1 [gb] Date 27.04.09 16:18 UTC
RUMBLE - I wanted to call my black lab boy Rumble, but was out-voted by the family.   Mines called Bagsey!
- By Wizaid [gb] Date 27.04.09 16:23 UTC
Yep me voting for Cosmo - only because I have a brother in law called Melvin LOL
