Topic Dog Boards / Health / Tiva's Eye Glucoma/tumor
- By dollface Date 25.04.09 14:23 UTC
Went to the vet- and she either may have a tumor or glucoma- she put some weight on her eye to check the pressure in both eye's not sure if it could be that... We could wait and see or treat her with somehting so we decided to treat her. I have to put BNPH in her eye every 8hrs for 7 days to see if it helps bring down the swelling cause her eye is pretty swollen- like sticking out more. Its very cloudy but she still has some vision in it. I could go to Saskatoon to an eye doctor for dogs and have some tests on her to find out if its glucoma or a tumor causing the pressure and the eye to bulg or maybe just have her eye removed- then it could also affect the other eye the reason why the tests are important to find out what the reason is for the bulging and really can't remove both eye's on her- but then its if its a tumor removing the eye may not be the last option....

I no now Iam gonna prob sound cruel and mean but she will be 11 yrs in June and I think I have to weigh everything here- all those tests and eye/tumor removal is gonna be one heck of a huge bill so I said no to traveling to Stoon try the ointment and see her again in 7days. If this doesn't work then I keep her happy and if it has to be then I guess I will have to pts.... Hubby and I talked about it and if she was like 6 maybe even 8yrs then we would do them options but she is an older dog. Her mom passed away at 9 her dad was 8 I believe and most people that got puppies off me they lost theirs at between 7-10yrs old.

She's my baby girl and I hope like h#ll this sab ointment works- its suppose to bring down the swelling cause I really don't want to think about the other option. Have already pts 2 ferrets before x-mas and Dozer not that long ago.

I no some people on here are prob gone b##ch at me for not going down the other road, but I have to look at her age and finacialy whats also good for our family- I love my dogs but am not willing to go into debt because of them either, I have to be realistic. If it wasn't for hubby I prob would go into debt up to my eyeballs and never get outta it  for my pets, but I have to think I have children, morgage, bills and everything else to think about to be able to live- have weighed this over and over in my head and I start feeling very guilty and it just plays on me. I no for us this is the right decision- Doesn't feel like it cause I love my Tiva- she was my very first boston and so such a sweety she is- she's my baby out of all my dogs.

Guess I am kinda looking for that Iam making the right descision here even though we already made up our minds :-( Even though I really don't want it to be....

I'm certainly not going to condemn you for considering all the options and trying to choose the best one in the longterm. You're very wise to let your head rule your heart. I'm very sorry that you're in this situation.

An awful situation to be in but as you say you have to look at all the options both financial and medical. Have fingers crossed that the meds help and you wont have to make the decesion

If it is glaucoma she will go blind very quickly and it is the most severely painful way for a dog to go blind. If she is not showing obvious signs of distress it may well be she has a tumour.

Let us know what it is, when you find out.

If it is Glaucoma does it stay painful all the time or only till she goes blind? I def don't want my girl to be in great pain... She does squint alot but still plays and eats. Her eye is still sorta bulging :-(
If it is a tumor do you think that hurts- what do you think may happen if it is that?

If it is glaucoma she would not be likely to be playing or eating. She would be feeling very sorry for herself and most probably crying a lot. It doesn't sound like she has glaucoma. However if she has already gone blind from glaucoma then the eye might still have a bulgy look but would no longer be painful.

Thanks for that- The vet said she still can see out of her eye but yes its still bulging...

The last day for these meds is friday and I guess I call her to see what she figures-

Hi,  Just thought I would add to this thread, as your situation is almost the same as we have just been through with my boy..he is 9 yrs old, and  has come through his op realy well.

He has lost his eye and they have succeeded in removing most of the tumor, but some is till there,

After a long succession of tests, , Glaucoma diagnosed , (wrongly)   , I have to say also I have 100% faith in my vet,  but as in all cases you treat the obvious first,  the eye was responding to the medication for Glaucoma well, but something .... both myself and my vet  where still unhappy with.

It became more  evident  his eye was bulging, a little more each wk, along with redness to the eye.. the pressure of the wkly tests where fine, but something was just not right,    the last couple of times we saw the vet (every wk)  the eye was progressively bulging  .

My vet also did a pressure test..(pressing the eye in) apparently  it should string back, rather like a sponge....but it didn`t.

Within a couple of days we had an appointment with a eye specialist, and she confirmed ...1)  his sight was no longer there in the eye..2)  there was a mass behind the eye.

From there we saw a neurologist , where he had a MRI scan... which confirmed what my vet and the eye specialist suspected.. a tumor behind the eye...Orbital meningioma  although a benign tumor , the fact  of where it is, it needed to be removed, as   the pressure was causing him great pain.

http://www.abbeyvetservices.co.uk/newsletters/jun06.htm

He has recovered from the op, does not miss the eye.. but sadly some of the tumor is still there as it has spread , and cant be removed, we are on a time limit with him waiting  to see where it puts pressure on next, as we have been told if it effects the nerves around his face, we will not be able to do anything more for him.

But on the whole he had recovered well,  in the space of 2wks, he saw 2 specialists, traveled up and down the country , had a couple of stays in hospital, a MRI scan, Ultra sounds done,  has contact lenses put in his eye, prodded and poked  here and there.

We have been offered radiotherapy, but declined , as we feel he has been through enough, and it is not guaranteed to work anyway.. the tumor is so spread out.

It  has cost a fortune, but luckily we are insured, and they   where 100%  behind us.

So sorry for rambling on.. I understand who you feel, and only you can  decide the next step, but if  your girl eye is anything like mine was , it will be painful,  the pressure was immense, and I only know how much it must of been effecting him, from the  way he is now, after the eye had been removed,  he is back to his old self again, he copes well with one eye.. and we cherish what time is left.

Good luck, you will make the right decision for you and your girl... whatever it may be..

Thanks for that...

If these meds don't work then we will just keep her as comfy as we can and if its the other then we will have to say good bye to our girl. I no she lived a long happy life being 11 on June 8.... I will prob be talking to the vet again on friday to see what she thinks, right now just taking one day at a time...
