The Kennel club general code of ethics: http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/247

states:

12. Will ensure that all relevant Kennel Club documents are provided to the new owner when selling or transferring a dog, and will agree, in writing, to forward any relevant documents at the earliest opportunity, if not immediately available.

as in with it at the time or with it at all? the answer to both is usually and yes. normally papers would be ready to go with the pups but i understand there can sometimes be delays, though now there is the online service it must be easier

Do you mean they promised to post them?  did you get a signed note to say they would e following (though these days registrations are back very quickly, and would normally be available at the time you collected the pup).

I would contact the breeder (they should be eagerly waiting to hear of pups progress), to ask them about the paperwork.

It is possible to find out from the KC if the litter has been registered if you have the mothers name and the litters date of birth.

Unless there is something in writing like an advert stating KC registered or the above signed undertaking there is nothing the KC can do about you getting papers.

If the litter were advertised as KC reg and are not then the Trading Standards could do something for false advertising.

how do i do that?

nothing has been said via myself and the breeder recarding kc papers i knew the litter where getting reg  but the docs where not in the puppy pack

i have emailed the breeder now to ask why?

If a breeder wanted a particular name for the pup they were keeping and, especially in breeds where colours or markings could affect choice, they had yet to pick their own pup until 7 or 8 weeks this could easily hold back registrations.

As mentioned by Brainless written assurance that papers would follow should have been supplied with the puppy and since most (but not all) registrations can be done on-line, then I'd expect paperwork to take no more than say 4 weeks at most after collection.

Much would depend on why the paperwork was not available when the pups were allowed to go to their new homes - some reasons are more valid than others :)

My boys came with their KC papers.
My father got a Lab pup at the beginning of the year, he didn't come with papers and i was concerned as we know the sire is defo registered as he does field trials and is known through family friends. My Dad saw the bitches KC cert so knew she was registered.
The breeder stated that he hadn't got round to it due to Xmas and what not and then had to travel abroad so there would be a delay, they were sent in the post rather late, but all the same he now has them..

I would contact the breeder on the phone for something important like this and just find ask about them and see if there is a problem or not.

My litter will be 6weeks old on Tuesday, and I still have not thought of any good names for them, let alone registered them.. so I know for a fact  that pups will be going with papers to follow.. Also not able to do them online this time, since dad not resident in UK...

Mine were not sold with the papers as I had to request for their mother to be allowed to have her litter as she was 8(this was done before the mating).  Also I just couldn't decide on suitable names either, only just done it this weekend but papers that were signed by both me and their new owners stated that they would get the KC papers once the pups were registered.  Mine will take slightly longer as I have to do it via post as I have to send the letter of acceptance off with the registration documents, but still should have them hopefully within 2 weeks.
