I know this is totally off topic but i was hoping you clever champdoggers could save me making a mistake.
I am being pestered by my son to get broadband, however i dont know a great deal and has anyone any good or bad reports please
NTL are offering it at £14.99 a month same as most other ordinary internet connections freeserve are £27.99 can anyone helpppppppp :-)

Ntl offer two speeds for broadband. For £25 per month you'll get the faster one which is well worth it if you like download music and stuff or play online games. If not the slower one would do. It's still faster than a modem any way and no dial up as it's always on.

You'll need a network card in your PC but they are only about £25 if you don't already have one on your motherboard. BB also gives you the options for having more than one PC and sharing the internet connection - which is what we do. My daughter has her PC upstaris - mine is downstairs and it's great. Very reliable too.

You only get it for those prices if you have their TV services though. You can't have it unless you do afaik.

And since it's "always on", check to make certain that you have a "firewall" program to protect the security of the information on your computer. :)

Broadband is superb if you use the internet a lot.
I am with Telewest Blueyonder and it costs me £25 per month & for that I get an always on service ( no need to dial up each time you want to surf just click on Internet Explorer and your on your home page immediately) and lightning fast speeds so that unlike dial up connections pages load instantly.
Really it depends on how much you use the internet and what sort of things you want to do.
If you download a lot of music (which might be what your son is after ?) then broadband is "the business" !! If you are just an occasional user then it might not be worthwhile.
I would say though that I would not go back to a dial up connection again & if you can get broadband for £14.99 p.m. that is a serious bargain !!!!

You'll also need a BB modem and filters which can set you back about £80.

Fiona - not if you get it through your set-top box - it's all part of that little gadget:)

Carolyn, Glad you brought up this subject! We are thinking about getting broadband ourselves. My son is bugging us as well. I didn't know there were other places to go to get it other than BT or SKY! To get it through BT it is 29.99 a month. You also have to pay a one time activation fee of 65 pounds and 85 pounds for the equipment. It's the plug and go. It's good to know there are others out there!!! Shirl

Really your limited to two options Cable or ADSL.

For more info on Cable providers try here http://207.228.234.38/uk/cable/cable.asp

and ADSL providers here http://207.228.234.38/uk/adsl/adslatoc.asp

You will also need to check that your local exchange is ADSL enabled here http://www.bt.com/broadband/

Hi Lorraine,
I've just upgraded to that one, is it a lot faster than other one,

I was on the original 1Mb trial for three months during beta testing and yes it is a lot faster if your using it to download or upload huge files. However, the general consensus seemed to be that for everyday use ie surfing etc you didn't notice that much difference from a standard broadband connection. Certainly, nothing like the difference between a dial up connection and broadband.
I didn't bother upgrading to 1Mb as I didn't reckon it was worth the extra £10 per month, but each to their own ! :) :)

Hi there,

I would suggest Telewest Cable broadband if you can get it in your area it is still the most reliable and fastest.

I have recently read some not so hot reports about BTs Broadband and know of a few people moving away from it.

Have been told that if you have BT broadband the charges include your normal phone bill, is that so, if so It's a good deal. Ja:)kie

Broadband is now available with quite a few companies. Please do not be mistaken that the are the same as they are not. I have not done a great deal of reasearch but my collegue in the next office has, they vary greatlt in speed and reliablility.

A good site for info is www.pipex.com

:( Up in my neck of the woods, Broadband is an extra-wide tractor tyre.

As far as BT (our only telecomms provider) are concerned, we are still just a handful of rocks off the north of Jockoland, and thereby undeserving of such things (oddly, Safeway have a similar idea).

Hah! Why am I complaining? It's only a couple of years since we got a digital telephone exchange! Besides, I'm on AOL, and AOL don't do broadband for Macs, anyway.

:( Disgruntled,
