Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Day 59-she's been panting all night
- By JanW [fr] Date 25.04.09 07:15 UTC
Hi all today is day 59 and Ellie has been panting all night, her temperature this morning is 37.3 yesterday 37.2, she has refused her breakfast - just a little nibble and then back off to her bed.  She went for a walk in the garden, looked as though she wanted to go to the toilet I was close by and check to see if she had the runs but nothng.  Could she be constipated?  Her tum looks a bit rounder this morning - are babies just getting ready and she is uncomfortable.  Is this too early?

Hi Jan

Sounds like she is very close, don't leave her alone at all.  One of my bitches had her litter on day 58 so day 59 is definitely not too early.  Good luck!

Thanks everyone you've put my mind at rest, she's just done another run out in the garden, this time I saw she does have a runny bum!  However I'm having to watch her as she wants to have them in the conifer hedge and it's pouring with rain!!

Sorry that sounded as though I was going to let her have the pups in the hedge!  Brains going already!! I meant to say she keeps asking to go out in the rain!

Things seem to be a bit calmer now, although shes still panting and looks a bit uncomfortable - no contractions and she's now started to have a little sleep - perhaps it's a false alarm!

ooo how exciting! :)
The calm before the pushing!!! My girl did similar, she panted loads, very restless and then slept for hours, I thought oh false alarm, but as soon as she woke up she was in the whelping box and started with the first pup!
Ooo keep us updated!! and good luck to you and your girl :) :) xx

Nothings happening here, she's been asleep for a while, but shes just starting panting again, she's not pushing or anything so just uncomfortable at the moment - I think it's going to be a long night!!

My last girl was the same as gemini, restless the day before, slept all night then woke up at 7am and had the first pup at 9am.  Very good timing on her part I must say :-)

Well we needed a trip to the vet to get things started at 6am this morning!  I saw what I assumed was a water sac at about 4.30 and after that nothing no contractions no straining so I called the vet to see what she thought.  I took her in and she checked her over and gave her a jab, 20 mins later she was off and they came every 15 mins.  I haven't checked her over yet but as I speak there are 10 little ones 7 boys and 3 girls!

Thanks for all your help

Glad you are vigilant!  Some people don't recognise inertia, and the longer they're left, the more chance of lost puppies.  Well done you - tired but happy I expect.  :-)

Congratulations, and let us know the final tally!

Hi all final tally was 11 another little girl was born, I thought there was something else there, she is the smallest and has taken a while to get going but all have had a feed.  I must admit instinct took over I just felt something wasn't quite right , although I don't have much experience of whelping I have read as much as possible especially on here and have benefited from your advice so thank you.  I was wide awake after no 11 thought I'd be awake all day but my OH fixed me a small whiskey (I know it was early!) and within minutes I was asleep.  I feel much better now!

Me too!!!
- By JanW [fr] Date 30.04.09 17:59 UTC
Thanks everyone, all pups are doing well only one slightly smaller one! Mum has been back to the vet as she had a temperature of 39.6 and one teat was very hard, she has antibiotics and seems a lot better.  However she is bit agitated today digging in the garden and not leaving pups alone then getting upset if they cry when she disturbs them!  After an hours or so she then goes back to staying with them quietly in her whelping box.  I don't think there is anything wrong her temperature was ok today and her undercarriage is definately better maybe she's just a bit sore afterall there is 11 of them!
Any ideas

Hold a hot flannel (don't scald her though!) against the hard boob and gently massage it to get milk out and soften it so that the pups can feed from it more easily. That's the best way to avoid mastitis. :-)
