- By Merlot [gb] Date 24.04.09 13:30 UTC
Only in small amounts. LOL my lot will not even put raw liver in thier mouths..and if by greed or accident I get a piece in they pull the wierdest faces while trying to spit it out!!! They love liver cake or cooked liver though!

Raw offal can cause the squits unless in very small amounts :)  As it happens only one of mine would eat raw liver and even then it was chopped up into minced meat beforehand but that was insufficient disguise to the others.

I feed offal cooked - if you're feeding a raw diet in general, offal need only be given in small amounts every 7-10 days or so and several raw feeders I know use it cooked but as training treats to balance the diet over the course of a week.

My dogs all beg for raw liver, they love it!  I feed it every 10 days or so, they get a mixture of heart, liver or kidneys.

Mine get a raw liver meal once a week, of circa 200gms added to mince etc.  I avoid feeding vegetables with liver as the latter is laxative enough!

thanks everybody, think i might cook it then, its only the butcher gave me a big bag today and i thought it would be easier to give raw rather than cook it all , i do normally cook it if i get small amounts, ahh well here goes i hate touching it and it smells horrible. yuk!!!

aaah, that would explain it then.

I changed the pup's food over to orijen and all was going well but then I bought liver to cook as a training treat but was put off by the thought of the foam and the smell involved so gave it between the 2 dogs raw.  they then had a marrowbone each the next night with the pup emptying his and stealing missys half chomped one the next night.  He has had very loose poos since then but I didn't put it down to the liver at the time - i will the next time!

My boy turns his nose up at raw liver and all raw offal apart from lungs.

I get a mixed minced offal in a shape of a huge sausage from the butcher who cuts it up into coins which i then freeze and when needed defrost and make into offal cake!! That they do love..

mine wont eat raw liver, cooked liver does go through them if fed too much, but will eat raw heart as long as its mixed in with their tripe.

While we are on the raw liver question what way to cook it do people find is the least smelly. I seem to have a very "sensitive " family LOL

It doesn't worry me but the moans I get is incredible, they should wait until I try cooking tripe !!!

Both my dogs have raw liver as a regular ingredient of their raw diet. One dog would eat it raw from the off whereas the other wouldn't. For the second dog I would flash cook it for 10 seconds in the microwave and he ate it without hesitation. I gradually reduced the length of time it was cooked for and he is now happy to eat it raw.

When you first start to feed liver it is advisable to feed in small amounts and gradually increase the amount as your dog's digestive system becomes accustomed to it -helps to prevent Dire Rear. My dogs can now eat sizeable quantities of the stuff at one sitting without it having an adverse affect.

Can't remember which poster said it had upset their dog's stomach but I did note that they had fed a marrowbone at the same time - the marrow inside marrowbones can also cause upset tums so it could well have been this that caused the problem rather than the liver or maybe the combination of the dog having both items on the same day.
