Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / DAY 61 & My Vet is BUSY!
- By pamb Date 23.04.09 13:50 UTC
My bitch is now day 61 & her water sac arrived when out in garden for peep at 5pm....no other sign of labour but dug all night and I was awake all night with her...slight mucus and ate well (re read B of B) and around 7 am this morn another sac then about 10 am heavy panting digging...gave her till 12 then called vet, he said he was full and couldnt see her and i was to call a vet that is local in village asap...which I have done and and they are busy as their vet is out...now just called my own vet back and its now after 2pm and still he hasnt called me...lucky so far anyway my bitch has just ate some chicken again & drank some water and doesnt seem to be straining or panting  heavy not sure if this is a good sign or not...the breeder of my bitch suggests give her some nutri and till 5pm as long as disharge is clear & she is not straining see how she does...she seems settled but I am worried this is my bitches 2nd litter she is toy breed &  been very healthy...I am awaiting my own and local villages vet to call now...any ideas/experiences? she is nearly 4 in June thanks

I'm a bit confused

"her water sac arrived  at 5PM"  an then another sac at 7am..
- By pamb Date 23.04.09 14:29 UTC
hi yes, she had a water sac at 5pm yest and 7 this morn...on phone now to vet! one finger typing!!!
- By PippaJ [in] Date 23.04.09 14:43 UTC
I hope she is ok, mine started as soon as her water sac appeared....are you sure it was a sac and not just the mucousy stuff they discharge first?
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 23.04.09 15:21 UTC
If they were the sacs then I would be extremely annoyed with both veterinary surgeries.  I never leave mine more than half an hour after if the sacs have come out, they are taken straight to the surgery.  Hope all's OK but I would definitely be worried about such a long delay.
- By lillymum [gb] Date 23.04.09 15:34 UTC
if i was you i would have got her to the vet and just sat there until someone saw her. hope all goes well :)
- By suejaw Date 23.04.09 16:58 UTC
Too busy, i think this is something which needs to be looked at right away, can't believe that they were too busy..
- By Sarah Date 23.04.09 17:04 UTC
If she is eating? is she likely to be that far into labour?

How does all this compare to her first litter?
- By Liz_R [gb] Date 23.04.09 17:21 UTC
One of my girls had a had water sacs appear at 2am in the morning and the first pup wasn't born until lunch time. She delivered 5 healthy pups. She was panting, but not pushing until about half an hour before she had the first pup. Hopefully a vet will have checked her out by now, but I think sometimes people rush to a vets too soon and vets give cesareans too readily.

They may both have been dealing with emergencies already.  It happens.
- By SharonM Date 23.04.09 17:23 UTC
If she's presented 2 water sacs, then you should have seen a pup by now, definitely time to see the vet ASAP!

One of my girls eats right up till just before her first pup arrives, then is sick about 5 minutes before whelping.

i would def sue the vets! they caused this by being too slow. even if busy, surely an emergency c section takes presidence over eveything else?
- By Isabel Date 23.04.09 20:51 UTC

> surely an emergency c section takes presidence over eveything else?

except other medical emergencies perhaps.  You might make enquiries but I don't think you can think about sueing until you know what was happening.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.04.09 20:58 UTC
I am sorry that your bitches whelping went so badly wrong.

According to the book of The bitch a pup should arrive within two hours of the water-bag, if not then Vet attention is likely to be needed.

I have certainly always had a pup arrive within that sort of time, and would have expected a Vet to advise coming in if nothing had happened by two hours for an Oxytocin shot.

an appointment with the head vet of the practise might be appropriate

>surely an emergency c section takes presidence over eveything else?

Even an emergency gastric torsion, such as we had today?

The point about emergencies is that they're unpredictable - if two happen at the same time it's a case of first come, first served.

Each pup has its own waterbag - when one appears the pup should follow shortly, certainly within 2 hours.
- By JeanSW Date 23.04.09 21:14 UTC
So very sorry to hear that you have gone through such an awful experience.  I expect a pup to arrive within 40 minutes after the water sac in my breed.  Thinking of you and your girl.  {{  HUGS  }}

hi my own vet for the last thirteen years has always been loyal & knowledgeable & kind, he has phoned tonight three times to apoligise and has been very upset too.
Our local vet was fantastic and recommened another whom lives in another town (we stay in a very small country village)
They were WONDERFUL. Our main concern now is just to make sure the wee ones get the very best we can provide & enjoy them. Forgive & Forget, things happen, sadly, lesson to be learnt,
I was taken aback as I was not prepaired to our vet being Busy, I should have thought about using two practises or thought about possiblilites of him having another emergencey.. but it never crossed my mind.

Re. Emergency yes their was two at my own vet a road traffic and a seizure on the vets table he is also  practises on his own.
Re. sueing...never entered my head!
Re. Book of Bitch how did i miss that!!!  as I thought I read first sign of imminent birth is bag sac...ONE SHOULD SOON BE BORN...Page 89 First signs...i never read two hours.
- By poppity [gb] Date 23.04.09 21:35 UTC
how upsetting for you, pamb.i hope your girl's two surviving pups go from strength to strength and that their mum soon recovers from the c- section.it's true that sometimes  circumstances work against us and no-one is to blame, though you deserve an explanation at the very least from both vet practices, after all you need to be able to trust them when you need them next.
- By Blue Date 23.04.09 22:51 UTC Edited 23.04.09 22:54 UTC
You can't sue the vet for the above.  The bitch really should have been at the vet the night before.  I don't mean that to sound awful , the outcome may have been the same but once that water bag goes a puppy should be there within a couple hours. If no pup straight to the vet.  A second bag in my opinion tells you there is a hold up and assistance is needed urgently AND to be prepared for the 1st one to be born dead.

Re. Book of Bitch how did i miss that!!!  as I thought I read first sign of imminent birth is bag sac...ONE SHOULD SOON BE BORN...Page 89 First signs...i never read two hours.   That is what imminent means.

Sorry to hear you lost so many , it isn't easy.

Mum has been feeding and cleaning them over night she is a wee trooper!

My Breeder is very well known and experienced (active member here) and she suggested to me to over the phone to wait as with one of the posters above who has toys too said that can happen sac then a delay in birth...I last spoke to her at 11.30pm and my girl was doing all the correct signs so we thought we were their. Imminent went too long.
Sadly as i said lessons learnt.

Can I add that all vets were thinking the best & my posting was of need.

Will let everyone know how they all progress............Fab I hope!

Oh so sorry to hear your sad news. As you say, now you need to concentrate on the 2 little darlings you have and of course their Mum. (((((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))))) for you after your horrible experience.
- By Papillon [gb] Date 24.04.09 07:19 UTC
Really very sad, I hope the remaining babies thrive beautifully.
