Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Flea control for pregnant bitch
- By itsadogslife [gb] Date 18.04.09 11:02 UTC
I have a bitch who is due to whelp on 13 May. She started itching a couple of days ago, and I have just groomed her and found a flea. Unfortunately for me this is a problem for this girl, she gets really irritated by the little blighters and I really want to get it sorted out if possible. We normally use Frontline, which the vet confirmed can be used on bitches in whelp but several breeders have advised NOT to use! I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place as I just want to do the best for my girl and keep her comfortable.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

google it on the internet and you can get up the advice sheets for the products, there is one that can be used on pregnant bitches but i forget which one

Frontline spray is licensed for pregnancy. Frontline spot on isn't.

Advantage is a safe spot on which can be used during pregnancy.

I can speak from experience, having used Frontline SPRAY last year on a pregnant Chihuahua bitch.  Can recommend 100% as she whelped no problems.

Thanks for that, I'll probably go for Fronline spray or Advantage.

Advantage

From the datasheet for Advantage:

"Studies on pregnant and lactating bitches, queens and does together with their offspring are limited. Evidence so far indicates that no adverse effects are to be expected in these animals."

Studies on pregnant and lactating bitches, queens and does together with their offspring are limited I would say go with front line or if she is close to whelping wait till after.

Why do the other people advise against Frontline spray?
- By white lilly [gb] Date 21.04.09 17:30 UTC
i think it could be ...if you spray mum after having pups thay could lick it off , but vet told me it was safe when in whelp just not atfer having them .

Hi, thanks for all the replies, I've been talking to other breeders today who have also suggested garlic, which I'm going to use. I also have a soothing shampoo with Evening Primrose and a spray containing Aloe Vera, Evening primrose and Lavender oil which will help soothe the affected areas. I'm going to get some garlic tablets or maybe fresh garlic?? as well as Frontlining my other animals. She's only got 3 weeks to go so really need to make her as comfortable as possible.
