Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Exporting to USA

Hi there

I have been asked to export to the USA.  Nice person involved in his breed club in the USA and recomended to me by the chairman of one of our breed clubs here so a good honest buyer.

However has anyone got any advice on where to start on exporting!  I have never considered it before but he is a really nice guy.

I would put them in touch with a company that deals with exports and have them deal directly with them, this way your only deal with the sale of the pup and any extra jabs blood tests required prior to pup being picked up for dispatch.

I have dealt with Overhill both for import and export and the service has been kind and efficient.

Thanks I have never considered it before but these people are so nice and have waited for some time that I would love to let them have one of my puppies.

I have just sent a puppy out to Canada. There were no real difficulties, first find out what heatlh test/vaccinations are needs to meet import requirements for USA. For Canada all that was required were routine puppy vaccinations plus rabies vaccination at 12 wks. These were recorded in a pet passport, no waiting time was needed between vaccination and travel. (He could not return to UK on this passport however until a blood titre has been taken and 6mths had elapsed from possitive result - this can be completed in Canada) . Airlines require a health check by a vet 24-48hrs prior to departure - this can be entered into passport as pages are available for this

To measure up for flight box :: measure pup from nose to root of tail and add approx 5"/ measure height from floor to top of skull in standing possition and add 2 -3 " and measure width (from above) across shoulders and double this measurement. We measured up one week before he traveled, ordered box online and he had a little time to get used to it before his journey.

Our  pup traveled out to Canada as excess baggage, it was much cheaper for the new owner to travel over, collect him and take him back this way rather than pay Cargo rates. Not all airlines will take dogs as excess baggage and they need to be booked onto the plaine at the same time as tickets purchased. Might be worth exploring for you ? . If the dog is to travel unaccompanied he will need to be booked to fly cargo, you can do this yourself or use a shipping agent such as Ladyhaye or Ryslip who will do it all for you. Label the flight box with flight codes and contact details for yourself  in Uk and owner in USA in case of emergancy, we also froze water into two of the flight box dishes so he had some water on route.

A bill of sale will be needed to show the value of the puppy as customs will ask in order to work out import tax.

Does this mean he travelled with them in the cabin?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 20.03.09 16:57 UTC
I had a pup go in cabin at 9 weeks she was maximum size allowed in the holdall.
- By klb [gb] Date 20.03.09 16:59 UTC
No -- most airlines will no longer allow dogs to travel in the cabin. He traveled in the hold (hence you have to book with airline as traveling with a dog in addition to booking the seats as the aircraft hold needs to be temperature controlled /ventilated ) He was booked in a standard check in desk at airport and a baggage handler came to collect him from the departure gate to be loaded onto the plane.

We have taken a dog over to the states when we relocated and brought 2 back when we came home. Taking dogs over is a doddle compared to bringing them back. They do have to be 12weeks and have puppy vaccinations but it varies from state to state regarding rabies. We were able to have that done when we got over there. I think you had to do it within 3 weeks of arrival. I did consider importing a dog from the UK when we were there and Karen is right it was cheaper to fly over and pick the pup up and take it back as excess baggage. (That's from the east coast). This way you get to meet them as well. British Airways, and Continental take pets and both were fine. In the US the crate was left by the luggage carousel when we arrived:0 We just took her out on lead and walked her through customs without being stopped. She had a bit of a sore throat and croaky bark for a few days but was otherwise fine. The dogs coming back were fine maybe because they had each other and therefore weren't so stressed. I however have never been so glad to see anything as I was when I was reunited with them!

hi I sent a pup to USA a couple of weeks ago. PM me if you want any help. Bear in mind the change of law/regulations that came in recently (last few weeks) re using an agent.

Hi KLB ( Karen)

I am shipping a SBT puppy to Canada, he is 11 weeks all they have asked of me is a health certificate. Is this right because he is 11 weeks, how old was the puppy you shipped to Canada. I am a little worried that i might need more when the little puppy gets over there. I shipped to puppy's to Chicargo last year and that was straight forward they only needed to have their 1st vaccination and a health certificate. Any help is really appreciated. ( I wanted to ship him next monday )

Hi Carrie

My lad when out at 12 wks which was the was minimum age the airline would take him. He will need an ISO microchip that is recorded on his KC registration paperwork prior to issue of export pedigree or the new owners will not be able to register him with the Canadian KC.  He will also need documentation to prove all the usual puppy vaccinations, rabies, and health certificate completed no longer than 48hrs prior to travel = we opted to have these all recorded in a European pet passport (health cert page 28) so all the required info was in one place. There is no requirement for the blood titre tests after the rabies injection but it does need to be done prior to entry to Canada.

I also issued the new owner with a sales reciept as customs will ask them the value of the pup so they can calculate tax payments !!

Hi Karen
I have been told that he dosen't need a rabies injection because he is 11 weeks. The KC documents will be sent off when he has the micro chip this Friday. Which airline was that you used? I have opted for Air Canada, they said as long as the puppy is over 8 weeks and before 12 weeks he dosen't need a rabies vaccination.

Our pup flew back as excess baggage with his new owners, flight tickets booked and airline notified that they would be travelling with a dog as not all aircraft can accommodate dogs. He flew Air Canada from Heathrow to Toronto, he travelled well and hasn't missed us one bit, who said dogs were loyal !!??!! He will hopefully be in the ring at the end of June.

You generally have to get the dates spot on to make it very simple.

Most airlines say they puppy must be 12 weeks BUT if you go over 3 months ( depending on state) you generally need to do the rabies vaccine.

What I have done in the past is send the puppy between the 12 weeks and the 3 months.

IE if the puppy was born on the 1st April it would not be 3 months till the 1st July but it would be 12 weeks by the 24th June. So I would send it between the 24th of June and the 1st of April.

Hope that makes sense.

Well I am getting there now.  The guy who is buying the puppy is coming over to collect her which makes me feel happier we do require rabies and full injections so she will be going at just over 12 weeks.

I am very excited and really hope she does well so I can go over and see her.

Thanks for your help.
