Came back from the woods yesterday as per usual, had a shower last night before bed, and wondered what it was on my arm, thought it was a small mole, turns out to be a tick!
Anything we can use to stop them attatching themselves to us??

I use Frontline on the dogs/cats, I was quite disgusted by this horrible little thing, and hope there's no more!

yuch! poor you! are ticks like fleas and dislike garlic? if so i'd say a does of chicken kiev (very easy to make!) and some garlic bread.

Yuk!!  How horrible - did you use a tick pick to get it off?   But please be aware, ticks do carry diseases, such as Lymes Disease which can be very very nasty - see here :-

I havnt looked at whether the link says this but the deseise is only transferable if the tick is on you for more than 24 hours

Meant to say, my dd takes this very seriously in US (they live in Connecticutt, in a forested area) - and they use a spray like this one every time they go out beyond their backyard !

Also be aware that frontline doesn't stop ticks attaching to pets either, it only kills then after 24 hours. The only product that repels ticks for dogs is either advantix or scalibor collars.
If you get one on yourself make sure you get it out whole with a tick hook or very carefully with tweezers, dont ever try to suffocate it with vaseline etc as many people often suggest as it increases your chances of lymes disease as the tick regurgitates its contents back into you! Its advised when walking in areas where ticks are very prevalelent to wear clotging with elasticated cuffs and tuck your trousers into your socks etc. I have to say i don't really do this tho and only had one once when i was camping, despite walking every day in the new forest, so they must prefer my dogs to me!

I was going to say hairspray or vaseline but just read the previous post and wouldn't want you to risk Lymes etc.
I would pop along to minor injuries or A and E and or ring your doctor for advice if you cant remove the whole beastie .
Oops just re read you post didn't realise you had already removed it silly me

Do they think that ticks cannot live in their backyard?   Not knocking them, but it really is necessary if you want full protection.  (I lived in CT for 15 years myself!)

Likewise, although I always blame a local, wooded common area for any ticks or bugs on my dogs - they might just as well have come from my garden.

When we take scouts camping if they get a tick they must go to A&E, Ive started back with Advantix after finding a sheep tick on Whistler two weeks ago!!

I found a tick attached to my lower back last year - as I couldn't see it it took a while before I realised what it was.  My ex son in law had had Lymes Disease from a tick he picked up in CentreParcs so I went to see the practice nurse at GP's.  She said not to worry - however a week or so later a severe rash had occurred around the tick area so I had to return and was prescribed some ABs which did the trick.

Nasty though!
