Topic Dog Boards / Health / PUppy chewed a piece of wire. advice please
- By sal Date 17.04.09 14:29 UTC
My 8mth old has chewed a piece of plastic coated wiring. The wiring itself is very fine and flexible,  hes just thrown up and bought several small pieces up,  he seems ok . What do i do ?  take him to the vet to get checked over feed him as normal or starve him?

How long after he ate the wire did he throw up? If he threw up 3 hours or less after eating it then chances are anything toxic hasnt been absorbed through the intestine. If he is looking well and his gums are not pale then I wouldn't worry too much but if he seems a little funny to you then there is no harm getting him to the vets.

just to add - i would starve him and encourage him to drink lots of water (maybe add a little bit of goats milk)

I would call the vet for advise.
Thinking about it surely food would help "wrapping" the wire and make the exit easier so I'm not sure starving is the thing to do. Is the wiring very long or has he chewed it in small pieces before swallowing it? I would think small pieces will exit easily but if there is a risk of a long piece being in him, this can create problems in the intestines, I remember hearing from somewhere.

I have given mine cheap white stodgy bread to do this and am sure it is a tip I read on here at one point.  TBH I haven't raked about poo but if there is bone fragments or other stuff I read that white stodgy bread goes all doughy round the item and any other items in the stomach to help it pass through a bit easier.  Not sure how much science there is in that but if it does the job.

Agree with Noora, and cheekychow does have a point about the bread.  As long as you are positiive the bits left to come out are just tiny chewed bits.  Any length - vet job to be on the safe side.
