Topic Other Boards / Foo / I need a new Vacuum any recommendations?
- By welshlassy [gb] Date 17.04.09 15:23 UTC
Hello
I'm really anoyed my vacuum had concked out, i took it to the shop who charged me £15 to unclogg it, brought it home and its still not right aparently it must be the motor which its not worth me replacing so any suggestions? I don't want to spend too much but on the other had i want a good one that will pic up the hair of two cavaliers and the mess of two children! Anyone got a henry hound? I can't bear the mess its driving me mad theres only so long i can use a dust pan and brush!!!

I've had almost every brand there is, and the ONLY one that hasn't broken down and had to be binned within the first 6 months is the Henry. Just the normal cheap Henry, mine is now several years old and I could never do without him! :)

my (admittedly battered and ancient) Dyson recently snuffed it and my bf begged me to get a Henry so given that he was cheap i caved- ITS GREAT! i normally hate the ones with an arm rather than an upright but he's dead easy to use and is very sooky.

eta: i find his smile nice to. the dogs petrified of him though.

though i rather fancy a Dyson roller ball, if not their price lol :)

the henry hound seems to have very good reviews, there is a price deffence though between that and the normal one.  I think i'll go and ask for my £15 back i'm gonna need it LOL

When I worked for Shelter we had Henry's to vacumn the carpets every day and they never gave us a bit of bother.  Likewise the cattery near me use them everyday as the cats have sawdust in their litter trays so the runs have to be vacumned out.

Yep Henry here also has the thumbs up as well. I have had Dysons, Hoovers, Vaxes and all have broken and so far my Henry ( yes when I use him I talk to him and call him by his name  ) I did want to get a Henrietta (nice pink colour but my OH Mike said that there was no way he would be seen dead hoovering up with a pink vacuum cleaner !! :-D

huummm no chance of my oh hoovering i don't think he even knows what the strange sucky thing is for!
So normal henry or henry hound?
- By Astarte Date 17.04.09 15:42 UTC
lol for £80 odd quid less everyone is pretty pro the standard henry...
- By LJS Date 17.04.09 15:51 UTC
We got the Henry with the special hep filter http://www.henryvacs.co.uk/acatalog/Allergy_Friendly.html as we have a human and a dog who have allergies to dust.

oooh that's interesting - but it's out of stock :(
- By furriefriends Date 18.04.09 09:14 UTC
for me its an upright dyson  I have mainly carpets. Got a reconditioned one for good price on ebay. Not had a henry but our school use henry's for all their cleaning so given the bashing they get I guess they must be good if you want a cylinder vacuum
- By bevb [in] Date 18.04.09 10:58 UTC
I had a Henry and found it really hard work, the static always gave me electric shocks and it left half the hairs behind and didn't go up to the edges without having to attatch tools.
I also had a Dyson Animal that was ok but heavy and awkward and didn't do corniers without attatching tools, but for the past 18 months I have had a Miele cat and dog and it is wonderful,
Vacuuming is so easy, every last hair dissapears and it goes right up to the skirting board without having to attatch the onboard tools.  Makes vaccuuming a pleasure and so quick and easy.

I'm on my 3rd Dyson. I have had a vax in between but when it got hot it had a safety device so it cut out (quite often with my GSDs hair)  and not work again until it had cooled down so vaccing the house took ages. The only thing that put me off the Henry was that it used bags. Maye they do a bag less model now.
- By welshlassy [gb] Date 18.04.09 12:49 UTC
I've just had a bagless elecrolux but i found emptying it and cleaning the filters a pain and rather messy, the henry you can buy a re-usable bag but i bet it would soon smell really doggy.  They do a henry extra thats got a turbo brush and and an odor elemating filter thingy so i may give that one ago, http://www.henryvacs.co.uk/acatalog/Henry_Xtra_Vacuum_Cleaner_HVX_200-22.html#a820004 i found the brush on the uprights good for getting the hair up but i was told by the hoover repairer that the suction is always better on the pull along ones sorry don't know the correct term lol
- By Snoop Date 18.04.09 12:56 UTC
I have an upright Dyson which has been great - although I'd quite like a Henry :-) They're so cute!
The good thing with Dyson is that if you do ever need a repair, there are only two set prices, one for if you need a new motor and one for anything else. The one time I did send my old Dyson for repair they sent me a brand new one!

My mum recently bought a £35 vacuum for the works office from Aldi. I can't remember the name of it but it's fantastic and I was quite tempted to swap it for my Dyson :-D

> i was told by the hoover repairer that the suction is always better on the pull along ones

Really. The man in John Lewis told me the opposite - but he was a Dyson rep. Shoot....I fell for that one, didn't I! :-D
- By welshlassy [gb] Date 18.04.09 13:05 UTC
LOL well saying that he went onto say thats why those are the only ones we sell........
- By welshlassy [gb] Date 18.04.09 13:12 UTC
well i've ordered one with the turbo brush thing i just hope its good, i did buy a vax one from argos it was ment to be for pet hair it was cr*p so i took it back, surly you should be able to get a good hover that picks up pair hair with out paying miele and dyson prices, it should be gold plated for what they sell them for.
- By Cairnmania [gb] Date 18.04.09 15:18 UTC
Well, I have the Miele Cat & Dog and it is well worth the price.   It literally can pick of my wall-to-wall carpet from the floor at full suction power!    Gets great reviews from Which too.     I got it to replace a Dyson upright, which was definitely not as good at picking up dog hair.   Not to mention I was tired of ordering replacement parts.

I got a free low-end Miele cylinder when I bought a Miele washing machine.  Full price I think they cost about £90 and I swear that is better than the Dyson I had too.

Me too!!! It's just arrived so I haven't used it yet but I really researched this topic and it came highly recommended by domestic and professional cleaners alike.

I am a definte DYSON fan, i think they are the finest vacuums on the market IMO.

I am definatly getting old before my time, i love cleaning products - my favourite aisle at tesco is the cleaning one. Sad or what?!!! :-)

- By TrishlovesMiley [gb] Date 21.04.09 17:17 UTC
I give a big thumbs down to dyson(I know of three people who have had them, different sorts, and they've all lost suction early on in their lives) and a Huge thumbs up to Henry! I would love a Henrietta! :)
- By welshlassy [gb] Date 22.04.09 10:01 UTC
my Henry came today! nice and shinny and has that nice new smell (don't supose it will stay like that for long) I was so excited its been four days since i vacuumed, so quite a collection of hair and things, and i'm really pleased with it i'm glad i got the extra one it picked up the dog hair no problems, only thing is the suction was that good on it its taken a thread out of my sons rug! GO HENRY GO HENRY great hoover and not a bad price at £110 delivered.
- By DEARLADY [gb] Date 22.04.09 20:24 UTC
we recently upgraded to a Bissell pet - far better than the dysons we have owned - I like the light lol

I got it at the bargain price of £67 + delivery special offer too ;)

my Mum bought a Henry and hates it, says it's worse than the dyson.....each to their own I guess :)
- By CherylS Date 22.04.09 23:05 UTC
Recently asked champ peeps about vacs myself and decided to go with the miele cat and dog and I love it.  Was  quite shocked the first time I used it because not only did it pick up all the dog hair (short haired breed) from my living room rug but when I turned over the attachment the roller had lots of long hair around the brush (mine).
