Topic Dog Boards / General / Brown patches on the lawn where bitches have been.
- By Ladybird [gb] Date 07.04.09 15:53 UTC
I am looking for information about Green Ums. They are tablets sold at Pets at Home and other pet shops for administration daily to your bitch so that her urine will not burn the lawn.  I know they are effective but wonder if anyone knows of any reason that I might not want to use them with Chihuahuas or indeed other small toy dogs.  Thanks.

Don't know anything about Greenums but have a dead area that was once a lawn am protecting it now but [I actually have a paved area cordoned off so they can wee and pooh now before they go on the grassed area - can't call it a lawn any more.
Other solutions, which I haven't mastered or done anything much about are; training your girls to go in a particular area in your garden, possibly with a sand pit kind of set-up, or maybe  laying astro-turf or some such so you can still have green but easily cleanable.

Thank you for getting back Heidi.  It's particularly the Green Ums that I am interested in.  I've also heard that tomato Ketchup on their food is good too and neutralises their urine but they are on dry food and I don't fancy Ketchup as it's a bit acid isn't it. Maybe someone will know and can tell me.  There are so many people on this forum with years and years and years of valuable experience and information. Thanks again.   Pauline.

These burnt patches on lawns with bitches always makes me wonder what I'm doing with my girls, cos I don't get them and I've got 5 girls.

Well I say don't get them.  IF, we happen to get a really hot dry summer I might notice the odd patch but as we don't get too many summers off 1976 or 2006 it's not too much of a problem.

The best thing is to have a watering can handy and if you see a tinkle then sloosh the area if you don't then just hope it rains. To be fair my lawn is not bowling green quality so maybe I'm not too bothered about the odd brownie area.

hi,i use a teaspoon of of pure tomato juice mixed in with our dogs food twice a day.this works brilliant and for the past 2 years ive come 2nd and 3rd in local gardening competitions mainly because of our lawn.i wouldnt use tomato sauce as it contains onion powder, sugar and salt.hope this helps.

I have been told to use Dog Rocks (from New Zealand) which are sold on line and from Pets at Home.  Peeps have said they are effective and I have 3 gals.  I have just started with these which you put in the water bowl and should start to be effective from now.

I remember trying these blocks a long  time ago. My dog just eat them !! ( no ill effects fortunately)

i had the same problem.they were supposed to last a few days, but we were lucky if they lasted a couple of minutes.at around £2 a tube,it worked out more expensive than the food itself.:-)

I'm cautious about anything that changes the ph of our dogs urine. If you're concerned I would simply water the area after the girls have piddled and that stops the brown patches, or put artificial grass down :)

I'm the same Pinky. I have 3 girls and all like to mark over where each other has peed. We hardly ever get brown patches on our lawn either - maybe it's the food we feed them on?! My friend has 2 bitches and his lawn was burnt to a crisp where his 2 had peed. His dogs were fed on a very cheap commercial dog food. Quite puzzling isn't it!

Thanks to everyone who contributed.  I feed Royal Canin  to my chihuahuas and my Cavalier. They have tit bits obviously and commercial "treats" and suchlike.  I will try the Tomato Juice as it seems the friendliest foodwise.  Don't want to try the Greenums on such little dogs although they do work I know.  If all else fails we live with brown spots and water well.  I'm not fanatical about the garden - just thought it could do with a bit of help.  If I could afford it I would run to  paving with tubs for a bit of pretty.  Good for the dogs nails too.  I might try phoning Green Ums and see if I can get some more information. If I find anything worthwhile I'll post it here.  Thanks again.

Dog Rocks are for want of a better explaination are a stone about the size of an egg(not easter one!).
They are placed in the water & last a few months.

Always read these posts in the hope that someone has found a solution :)

Don't think it's the food, as mine create patches, and they are all raw fed.

Tried a small patch of astroturf, but it gets messy just like a carpet, every leaf bit of earth etc that falls on it just stays there, so decided against it. Otherwise I'm sure I would have an overwhelming need to hoover the 'lawn' :)
