Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Show collar / lead for Irish Setter?

A new lady at our ringcraft was asking what her daughter should show her setter with. Currently they are using a rope slip lead, but the dog apparently isn't too keen on it. I recommended this site, but just in case she can't find the web address, thought I'd ask the question, as I know there are several expert setter people on here! Also links to places to buy whatever is the normal thing to use would be great!

Brown slip leads are the only type of lead used on Irish.  I use a brown leather slip lead but as a pup I used a lightweight brown nylon lead look here http://www.libbys-tack.com/shop/customer/product.php?productid=162&cat=0&page=1 one of the first two sizes would be best - I found the wider of the two easier to control my boy with as a youngster but for a smaller framed dog or bitch the narrow one would be fine and would be the width most widely used.

Hi Lucy, like Claire, I use a brown leather slip lead. Quite a narrow one for showing but I have a brown nylon webbing lead for training class.

In the old days it was popular to use a half check show lead in a variety of colours  for instance, Sh Ch Barnsforde Winston was shown on a white lead, but that was back in the 1970s. Nowadays it's brown for everyone, usually leather.
