We are considering buying a Lakeland Terrier puppy. We have a three year old daughter and live in the countryside ( Gloucestershire ). Would the breed be suitable for us - I've heard they love children, but would thay be Ok with such a young child. Also where could we find a reputable breeder in our area?

You must always remeber that they are a Terrier! That means that they are keen hunters, and quick reflexes, so a child will have to respect the dog and not push it into retaliation, or encourage over rough nippy play, this is advice applicable to most breeds, but terriers are vermin killers so gameness is one of their traits, so they are more likely to want to play rough shake games, than gentle retrieving ones, lol!! I know a couple of Lakies and they are lovely, but I know them from Obedience class, they are well socialised and well trained!

Get in touch with one of the breed clubs, and arrange a visit to a breeder, preferably one who hasn't pups at the moment, then you can get an idea of how they are around your daughter, and gauge their demanor. One mans meat is anothers poison, different breeds have different activity levels and ways.
