Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / First Season For Bitch
- By paulgraham [gb] Date 07.04.09 12:13 UTC
Hi there my bitch is 2 years old now and she hasn't had a season that we know of but now all our boys and dogs in the park are all over her and our boys are constantly trying to mount her so we took a little swab from her but no blood just a light brown sticky liquid is the normal as its her first proper season and if  so what day would she be at if still this colour Thanks.

If you haven't noticed it before, assume it's Day 1 and keep her away from public places where you're likely to meet dogs (and all your own males!) for at least 21 days - 28 to be on the safe side.

Hi there so is that normal for the brown sticky stuff , and if so when should i start to notice blood

Probably in the next day or two. Is her vulva swollen? If not then I'd take her to the vet just to make sure she doesn't have an infection such as pyo. The smell of infection can also fill dogs with desire - the two smells seem to be very similar as far as they're concerned.

Yes it is a bit swollen but not that much. im taking her to the vets sometime this week to get blood tested and that will give an accurate date of when she should be mated.

I wouldn't mate on her first season, even if she is two years old and has passed all necessary tests. I'd wait at least until her second.

Yes i know i was thinking that but the breeder of the dog said that as her season has been so long ,to mate her on this one as long as my vet has no problem with us doing this. i know what youre saying but alot of breeders have said to mate her this time as she is such a great dog.

Except that she has fertility problems.  These things are often passed on in the line.

Exactly. I'd always make sure that a bitch had at least one normal season before mating.
