Topic Dog Boards / Health / Inflamed,Red, Scabby, itchy ear? Help Please
- By dollface Date 05.04.09 17:57 UTC
My friends lil Frenchie one of her ears was very scabby, inflamed, red, itchy and very sore- the other ear was same but not as scabby. The ear does not seem dirty at all so ruled out ear mites- actually her ears are very clean besides now from the scabs and they look a lil pussy now...

She took her to the vet and this vet gave her some ear drops and some stuff to rub on her shoulder  What would putting stuff on her shoulders do? He said could be ear mites he was not sure- Couldn't look down the one ear because it was to red and inflamed but the other ear not as bad- so why couldn't he look down that one more and take a swab? Don't understand it- My vet (our) was not in so had to see someone else and she said he was very hard to understand and this took an hour and a half and she walked away more confused. Told her to see if the meds work should no with in 3-4 days and make an app with our vet.

My thought was if Ear mites wouldn't her 2 bostons have it by now- and also my 3 bostons cause I dogsat her awhile back, and non of our dogs show any signes of ear scratching- Wouldn't her ears appear dirty looking?

Any idea's what this could be....

I'd say ear mites that have caused a severe reaction before all the exudate comes to the surface....Are you aware of the smell of ear mite infestation? Fairly characteristic-  once smelt never forgotted. I make a point of smelling my lots ears regularily :-) or when the Thornit needs re-doing.

Would the other 2 dogs she has not have it to then?

She was given Revolution cream for her shoulders, Malacetic Otic and Surolan for her ears- Hopefully this stuff works....

Toolz, lots of my customers dogs have that awful smell in their ears, some have ear infectins which clear up with treatment but just come straight back.Would you say the Thornit is worth a try for them?

Does the vet perscribe/perscription Thornit or can you just pick it up at a shopping mall of sorts?

As far as I know it's only available online. It's definitely not available from vets in the UK.
