14 year old entire male has no problems with his water works can hang on all night, but will go and cock his leg all round the kitchen if he thinks we are going out. he will do it as we are getting ready. We might have been in all day so he has had company. Sometimes I've been out and when I come in he goes and does it. He is obviously trying to prove and point, trouble is how do I stop it.

Hope someone else can give you better news than I have. I had a male mixed breed that did the same thing. I never did break him of this habit. He would cock his leg up on the corner of my bed!! Always my bed too, noone else's. Good luck. :-) Shirl

Yappy if it really is a spite thing, you don't :-). We had a sheltie bitch who was a spite sh**ter. She was very attached to my mum, and always slept with mum when she stayed with us. You could always be absolutely certain of finding 'protest messages' from Pixie for several days after mum went home again. Occassionally we got the same sort of 'messages' about other things that annoyed Pixie, but she did this throughout her life and was clean in between times. If its a new thing with your dog maybe something else is going on despite the fact that he is clean at night.

HI Yappy

I wonder if he is "getting on a bit" and feels maybe a bit insecure when you go out? Especially if he normally spends most of his time with you.... It could definitely be a protest message, but not necessarily out of spite; dogs do get more insecure as they get older, or rather some dogs do. Getting ots of his scent strongly everywhere may help him feel better.

As for doing it when you come back in, sounds odd I know but it could be the same reason. I have to say if you are really fed up about it, and are unable to manage (not much fun!) this is one instance where i would get in touch with a reputable behaviourist. Just a thought, anyway :)

Hi Yappy, if he is 14 years and not 14 months and only just started this something must have happened that had not done so before. Have you had him checked by your vet if not I think that should go to the top of the list. When you are sure that he is as well as a dog of 14 can be then perhaps you can work out what has changed, and if pos. put it back as it was. Ja:)Kie
