Topic Dog Boards / Health / Devils Claw (No Bute)
- By goldie [gb] Date 03.04.09 08:00 UTC
As some already know my GR has HD.
She has synoquin everyday and carprodyl every other day 1 tab.....and she needs that tablet.
I was recommened devils claw and bought some in liquid form.
Now what i want to know is wil it substitute the pain killer or the synoquin please.

I got it as pain killer substitute,as to take her off tabs as only 3yrs old.
I think i have confussed myself now and wonder if i have got the correct thing.
Thanks for any advice.

I thought Devils claw was a pain killer, anti inflammatory, well in horses it can be used for laminitis, instead of using Bute.

Hi Kenya.
Thats what i thought as ive given it to my horse in the past, but not sure if it is on same lines as synoquin and dont want to mix the two just in case its to much.
someone will come along that will know im sure.

Hi Goldie,

I have just replied on your other thread, before seeing this one.  Devils claw is anti inflammatory and pain relief, so if it works for her it could substitute for pain killer. I think synoquin is a joint supplement helping to maintain cartilage, which you would continue to give.  You could also give the Devils Claw with the pain killers, but perhaps reducing the pain killers.

My dog has her pain killers (lower than recommended) plus Devils Claw, and it seems to give an extra boost. I believe the trick is to reduce the painkillers and add the Devils Claw, and change the combination until you find the levels that work for her. Caprodyl used to be Rimadyl I think, which I used for years on my previous dog.

If you are in any doubt, ring your vet and ask if it will be OK.

I give my girl Fish Oil Tablets, Green Lipped Mussel extract. I do not give her any pain medication (metacam) on a regular basis, only when she shows signs discomfort which luckily is not that often.

What is her score BTW ?

Im going to give devils claw a go with her,see how she gets on with it,i will mix it for a while.
Its quite expensive. £30 for 2.5ltrs not that i mind that,if its doing some good.

Used Devils claw root from Dodson & Horrell - the dried powder/granule stuff they do for horses- for the Rott for a couple of years, used to give her about 1/2 teaspoon a day sprinkled on her feed, she was on Metacam the last few months, also used a bioflow collar on her for about 6/7 years. The D C R was about £16 for 1 kg and a tub lasted for aaaaages, dont know how dose would compare with the liquid you mention.
