I know there are a couple of SWD people on here...could you give me some advice re grooming one! I have a 5 month old one coming to be groomed next week,he has never been groomed before according to the owner and is a bit of a handful!!

Needs to be clipped all off and for the coat to be started so he gets a really good curly coat.  PM me for more details.

I have a friend who breeds them and she said they are clipped of once a year then the curls are tease apart when grooming to stop them matting but they should not be brushed.

Or combed :)  Photo's will be sent to you if you PM me your e-mail address.  Coat will be woolier than the one that I'll be clipping later though but you'll have an idea.  Warning the pup will look awful but the coat will soon come back and much better than before.

Suddenly panicked when I saw the title, what GROOMING A SPANISH WATER DOG.  Then realised we weren't talking about a daily groom :-D  Forget that my idea of grooming is that of a TT, thrice weekly brush, big comb, medium comb, smaller comb ;-)  Or clippers in the case of my spring lamb.

Believe floating around there's a very good article on how to deal with the Spanish coat & explaining what it's like & why.  JennyB's not around, sure it was her that gave it to me.  4 years on, I'm learning by the day.

You learn something new every day - I never knew certains breed shouldn't be brushed and that some need their puppy coat shaving off to help the adult one come through.  Very interesting!
