hi all
  we have an 8 month old staffie,she seems to have exessive sleep in one of her eyes shes had for a couple of days now,could anybody tell me if there is a simple remedy for this or is it a trip to the vets?

Sounds like she has an eye infection...which would be best solved with antibiotics from the Vet, in the mean time you can GENTLY bathe in saline solution. There are a couple of nasty diseases(like Distemper) that can produce 'sticky' eyes, but I assume she is fully innoculated?

Joe, you do seem to have a few problems with this pup? Did you work out the mange thing or take her to a different Vet at all?? The infection in her eyes MAY be related to the mange...I just wondered if it was sorted out and how? Cheers, Dawn x PS Just being nosey, not critical at all you understand? ;-)

yes we took her to another vet,he took a skin scrape and put her on antibiotics and we was given a liquid type solution to put on her back(sorry i cant remember the name of it,the wife takes her to the vet you see) from what i can remember him saying it was a type of mange,apperently he said its quite common around our area due to foxes etc.
its only been the mange thing that we've had problems with really and her eye of course but she is all upto date with her inoculations etc and the vet is very happy with her.
are these not the run of the mill problems people get with most pups then or do you think its a little out of the ordinary? joe x
    

Hi Joe, sorry didn't mean to imply something at all!! Yes it depends where you live...lot's of foxes causes lots of problems...but if you have had the mange eliminated it's obviously not that either! You are just unlucky I think! I think you're only problem is being a little naive about care. But then, that's what these boards are for! I was just checking she was innoculated, so hopefully nothing more serious than a common old eye infection! But until you ask a question you can't be sure of an answer! I was a bit sceptical about someone saying that 'hair loss' maybe due to 'teething' when I read some of the other posts! I've never come across that, but I'm not an expert either! Please keep seeking help if you need it, we don't mind and rather you asked than worry about things, however silly they may seem to you, they're important enough to answer and we're here to help! :-)

The only people that get a bee in the ear are the ones that come on and ask stoopid questions like 'how often can I breed my 'pet' quaility, non KC registered dog', then ignore all advice from seasoned breeders!

i understand where you are coming from but please don't think im being funny when i say this i don't think im being naive about care,we care for our pup very much and look after her very well,i have 3 kids who fall ill once in a while with this and that but that doesnt mean i dont know how to care for them and the same goes with our pup.
as ive said im not trying to be funny to you i just fell somewhat bemused as to why you whould want to use that phrase,i have found this website to be very helpful in the past as i gather there are some very knowledgable here and want to continue to use it with predudice.
she is our first pup and im sure i have alot to learn but the wife has been brought up with dogs most her life so together id say our pups welfare wasnt an issue.
i thank you for your reply and i have booked her into the vets for tomorrow morning,and please dont think im trying to be funny in my reply as i do appreciate all the advice ive had in the past and know doubt will have in the future.

My dog had an extra goopy eye and it was down to his food. Which was purinas beta, he had been fine on it for a good year or so then it just started all of a sudden.

I thought sarcoptic mange is highly contagious and can be contracted by even the best cared-for pet?

I'm not going to argue with you, after having put your twopennyworth in! I already said it was a run of problems and someone very sensibly seeking advice that had been a tad unlucky. Most of us recognise mange and don't need to ask...I also DID NOT put in bold anything to get a point across! The poster and myself have agreed that neither of us were being 'picky' I had already apologised if I came across that way...as I said...just gathering info!!

I'm not trying to cause an argument. I have never come accross mange before and was asking a genuine question as my sisters dog is having tests for a skin problem at the moment. I did not put anything in bold to be sarcastic, I was highlighting the point I was referring to out of a sentance.

It's very akward to 'talk' on here sometimes as, it doesn't matter how carefell one is to try to avoid any 'undertones' in ones post, there is always somebody ready to turn it into a slanging match or at the very least get overly defensive :(
