had a terrible night puppy seemed to be fading all of a sudden ,although he and all the rest of the litter had put on weight ,worked on him for hrs giving lectade and nutridrops kept him on my chest with a hot water bottle , nothing seemed to be working so rang the vet, hubby and my friend took him I said my goodbyes (I am broken) they have kept him in on oxygen tent , giving antibiotics  and going to feed him all night to see how he goes they are going to ring me if he doesnt improve or if we loose him during the night ..no call as yet ...I am so worried..they think he may have taken in fluids before he popped out which they said can happen...trying to consentrate on other babies

I had this happen with the litter from my Finnish trip two years ago.  It was worse still that it was the sex I wanted to keep.

It is sad, but we have to accept that not all pups are destined to make it and concentrate on the others.

I tend to think it is natures way of taking out the unthrifty or weak saving possible heartache for us and new owners later.

Hope pup pulls through.

- By STARRYEYES Date 01.04.09 22:58 UTC
we lost him ..he came home but slowly deteriorated we took him to the vet this morning to have him PTS as he was having more fits.Vet said its just nature taking its course.

We now have another puppy in the vet no fits but I could tell he was going the same way rushed him to vet he is now in oxygen tent on antibiotics and being hand fed through the night , so will know more in the morning.

I am so distraught please say a little prayer for my babies tonight.

Roni~

Mum was given oxytocin as  she wasnt progressing in labour 4 babies ariived very quickly I am sure this is what has caused this to happen to my puppies. I would be interested in hearing other people opinions?

I can't comment on the oxytocin as Pippa did it all by herself but I really hope it wasn't cos of that.

My girls have been given oxytocin during the end of their whelpings but all pups have been born dead bar one who was a bruiser, after the oxytocin.
- By Isabel Date 02.04.09 08:34 UTC
As Oxytocin is generally given when there has been some degree of inertia I think you would be hard pushed to know if any problems were down to the Oxytocin or the protracted delivery itself.
- By scarlettwynter [gb] Date 02.04.09 08:54 UTC
I am so sorry about the little one you lost and hope that the other one pulls through.

I have had a bitch receive Oxytocin in the past with no side effects.

im so sorry, best of luck to your other little one. x

Hi Starreyes,  Fingers crossed for you and the puppy.

Thinking this through rationally..

Generally after giving Oxy one appears quickly.  If the 4 appeared very quickly then they were all needing to be out so there was a bottleneck somewhere.

I personally don't believe this is due to the oxytocin. The complication was there.

It is probably common for puppies to be born dead after oxy ,not related to the oxy (I am not saying % as I don't know) just the basic fact you would not be given it to them if you did have some delay that necessitated the use of it in the first place.

I have used it a couple times generally more to do with exhaustion and puppies have always survived.

I'm so, so sorry Roni. I agree with others that I don't think it was the oxytocin either. I had a litter of kittens born that way 2 ½ weeks ago and although I lost one, he was the smallest all along, and the other five are all fine. I'm keeping everything crossed for the remaining pups to be fine. HUGS.

So sorry!! poor babies and poor you. This just shows one of the down sides to breeding. Takes a real brick to be able to withstand the sorrow of loosing any puppies. My thoughts are with you. I'm sure your other babies can help you through.
- By STARRYEYES Date 03.04.09 13:08 UTC
gratefully through another day....
