We need to get a sample from one of my dogs to the vet next week. I'm away so it will need to be my OH that does the deed.
This is a discreet dog that would rather pee well out of sight, he doesn't cock his leg very often and will usually do a natty little 'leg stretch and thrust'. He doesn't have huge ground clearance either. I have a sterile bottle to take to the vet but I'm planning to use a small plastic tray to collect.
I thought of suggesting to my OH that he keeps the dog on the lead, and that he leaves the other dog indoors to minimise distraction. Also if he waits a little longer before letting him outside it might help.
Is there anything else I should plan for or any tips I can give him? Thank you
With the girls, I tape a plastic bag to them to collect a urine sample. I couldnt get one before I did that, and now when the vets need a sample, I just tape the bag to the dog, and once collected bring it down.
May be easier to do this with a male dog than trying to catch it with a saucer.
Oh you dont want to see their faces! Or the neighbours faces as they are laughing so hard! But it works, and its the easiest way I have found on a small breed dog, since when they sqwat, its touching the grass. LOL
Just had to do this with my lad as we discovered he has a wee problem (hoping only a spot of cystitis) after returning from boarding kennels. I used an old plastic ice cream container, and made sure he was on his collar and lead when I let him out for his first wee in the morning. Loving the plastic bag trick for the ladies though :-)
I'd use a largish container like an ice cream tub for a male that lifts his leg or a low rimmed wide dish for one still squatting or for collecting from bitches :)
Great tip I got on here (cheers Lucy!) when I urgently needed a sample for an appointment and my girl had already gone before I got my act together was to get her to drink more using something like luke warm tea. It worked :) May be worth keeping in mind should your lad manage to do the deed before you've got your chosen collection vessel in place!
I had to do this recently with my boy, he wouldnt go in the garden with me following him so I had to walk him up the road sticking a big jug under him everytime he cocked his leg - at 7 months pregnant I must have looked a right sight !!!
Whenever I've needed a sample I get mine to "go" on hard surface and throw wad of cotton wool on it quick. Dont know what my lot would do with a plastic bag stuck to them. What us dog owners have to do LOL
Needed to get a sample recently from my long coated GSD bitch. When she squats you can't even see what's happening as her skirts sit on the ground all around. Easy Peasy though, I just use one of the plastic chinese take away dishes, it's a big enough area that you don't need to worry too much about position, and you can feel when the wee starts to hit it then you know you've got it right. Works like a charm :)
Thanks all for your urine collecting techniques. My OH managed it in his usual capable style whilst I was packing to go away. All I had to do was drop it into the vet on my way...
Incidentally he used the small container that the mushrooms came in - deeper than a tray, smaller than an ice cream tub but worked exactly as hoped. I don't think I'd have risked the plastic bag, we might have frightened my boy from ever peeing again!!
