There seems to be some confusion over how best to post replies :)

Now that the forum has lost it's (personally much grieved over :-p) indents and posts appear as lists only, could we please try to post replies which are specific to a particular poster's comments by using the 'reply' button on said particular poster's post (starting to sound like Peter Piper's pepper here :-D )

Sometimes the person's post to which we are replying will have had numerous other posts added under it before we've had the opportunity to respond - in that case it is better to still use the 'reply' button on the post we're commenting on but, to avoid confusing other readers, add the member's name and/or the specific quote we're referring to :)

If any new members don't have their options set to receive email notifications of replies, it may be worthwhile doing that :)  Otherwise it is very easy for the intended member to miss a comment which was meant for their attention but directed elsewhere by the wrong reply button being used.

In the case of any members added to our 'ignore' lists, no notifications will be received (bliss ;) )

HTH,
regards Teri

Thanks for that, but.....what do we do if we are just making a general comment that is not directed at anybody. Do we just press reply to the last message on the thread??

> Thanks for that, but.....what do we do if we are just making a general comment that is not directed at anybody. Do we just press reply to the last message on the thread??

I usually reply to the original post in that case
- By ceejay Date 27.03.09 13:41 UTC
Always wondered about this - will my post come out after yours?  Or at the bottom - in which case it makes no difference - unless of course as you say you get notified if someone replies.  Testing now!
- By ceejay Date 27.03.09 13:44 UTC
So there is nothing on my reply that says that I replied to you - of course if we used your name then it does.  Most of us use quotes to make it clear who we are replying to and if our comments are general.  Quite honestly I have enough stuff coming into my inbox now without being notified that someone has replied to me by e-mail.  I always come into check if there is a topic or query that I am following and don't rely on notifications here either.

> Thanks for that, but.....what do we do if we are just making a general comment that is not directed at anybody. Do we just press reply to the last message on the thread??

as crespin says, reply to the original or the last post but mentioned its just being tacked on.

it has been confusing recently- particularly people replying to one person while quoting another

just a refresher for new folks, you quote by hitting reply to the post, highlight the text with your mouse then click the quote button on the bottom of the original post ("")
- By Astarte Date 27.03.09 13:55 UTC
it should go on the front page of the forum, not your in box. you just click the prompt and it takes you to the message.
- By ceejay Date 27.03.09 13:58 UTC
Oh I am confused now (easily done)  Of course I replied to Teri but so had Fred's Mum.  Now I see that Crespin's post came in between.  I thought that all posts appeared at the bottom whoever you replied to.   Do posts pop in between or not?
- By ceejay Date 27.03.09 14:02 UTC
I meant I don't do e-mail notification of posts because I look on here everyday.
- By Astarte Date 27.03.09 14:06 UTC
no, posts just go to the bottom of the listing no matter who you reply to.

it makes it easier to read if people quote

> Oh I am confused now (easily done)

what their replying to

or mention who they are speaking to :)

clearer?
- By Astarte Date 27.03.09 14:06 UTC
i didn't know you could do email  notifications. that would be annoying.
- By Teri Date 27.03.09 14:17 UTC Edited 28.03.09 13:43 UTC
Hi ceejay

posts appear at the bottom - i.e. in order of the time and date posted rather than who the reply is to :)  Don't know if I've ever mentioned it (Mark? grumpy fae Glesga ring any bells :-D ) but I preferred the previous system whereby replies came under the posts they were made to - but sometimes pages became skinny to the point of skeletal ... hence the current format.

I prefer email notification to constantly checking the board - often I'm busy elsewhere but will spot an email and so pop back into CD.  Other times I'm AWOL and it could be a week or more before revisiting the board but again, emailed replies (the notification also includes the content of the post) I can decide whether or not to go back into something.

It only gets tiresome when posts are sent replying to me when the content relates to someone else who in turn may have wished to respond but missed the post meant for them :)

> i didn't know you could do email  notifications. that would be annoying.

I get them, and its not to bad.  I check emails several times a day, so I dont get an abundance of emails saying "Champdogs Information Exchange Reply Notification".  I never open them to see what they say, just come on here.
- By Teri Date 27.03.09 14:35 UTC
Another handy (IMO) aspect of email notifications is for PMs - they're notified too, and again with the content ot the message :)  Useful for folks who want to get in touch with someone who's not been on the forum recently but don't have their private email addresses.

The wonders of CD - so many to explore and ever more unfolding :-p
- By Teri Date 27.03.09 14:46 UTC
For general comments I reply to the OP or, if replying to the last post, try to mention I'm just tacking on at the end :)

For example on congratulations or birthday threads, I reply to the person who opened the post unless the intended recipient of good wishes has already joined in then I reply directly to them
- By ceejay Date 27.03.09 15:58 UTC
Sorry but it only makes a difference for notifications doesn't it - as a reader of the thread it is only obvious who you are replying to if someone adds a quote or starts with a name.  It 's difficult to get everyone educated to the correct way when the last post is the easiest to reply to.  Never mind - I am bringing it up to the top again now :-)

I can see that it is easy to miss a reply if the threads disappear quickly from the latest active posts page.  Unless you are thorough and go through each section - (which I don't unless I am looking for a thread) then it is easy to miss a reply to an earlier thread.

Ummm I suppose it makes sense to have e-mail notification - it is automatic on a lot of sites such as Face Book I think.  I don't look at those every day.

I prefer this format for CD because it was easy to miss things before - at least it automatically goes to the last post read.  I hated that getting thinner down the page thing.

Hi ceejay

> Sorry but it only makes a difference for notifications doesn't it - as a reader of the thread it is only obvious who you are replying to if someone adds a quote or starts with a name

not necessarily but yes, mainly :)  OK, I opened this thread so I'm first on the list and as it happens was last on it too when you posted and as it happens you're replying to me anyway.  However, had Astarte for eg been the last poster on the thread, and from her post she doesn't use email notifcations either, then had you just hit the last post to reply, the reply you've just added would have gone to her and she couldn't really respond on the pros and cons of emails notifications ..... hope that's clear.

mainly if you're querying something someone has posted or making a comment for or against a point posted, doesn't it makes more sense to direct the post to the person whose post prompted your reply?  :-D  (I'm getting dizzy now :-p )
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 27.03.09 16:32 UTC
I think we need to start a petition to 'bring back the indents', it was so much easier to read the threads even though they did get rather squished at times :-D
- By ceejay Date 27.03.09 16:49 UTC
Teri!  Will remember this now - my head is spinning too :-)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 27.03.09 18:37 UTC

>if you're querying something someone has posted or making a comment for or against a point posted, doesn't it makes more sense to direct the post to the person whose post prompted your reply?  :-)

If you think of it as being like snail-mail (if your mother sends you a letter, who do you send the reply to - your mother or someone else in your address book?), or even chatting at a party (do you reply to someone who just said something, or another person in the room) it becomes much easier to remember. :-)

Thanks for that, I wondered where the quote button was on this forum, was very confused! It's very small and faint, I hadn't noticed it.
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 27.03.09 20:18 UTC

> It's very small and faint, I hadn't noticed it.

I hadnt either but on close inspection (if this works) i think i have found it :-)

Edited to Add - Yay it worked i have found it!!!
- By Astarte Date 27.03.09 20:21 UTC
lol, happy to help :)
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 27.03.09 20:25 UTC
I am still very confused at whos comment i should click reply to though.
At the end of the day we are all here to read each others comments so does it really matter which button we press?? :-) Its only comes up as a notification on the top of the page anyway - hardly anything major.
If a comment is directly for someone we put their name at the start.
As someone said, if you are particularly interested in a thread you look at it regardless as to whether someone has commented on your comment or not.

......I am going to get myself a glass of wine now as i have succeeded in confusing myself :-)
- By HuskyGal Date 27.03.09 20:39 UTC
Oooh slosh us a bit of that vino over here Laur :)

I must confess on a thread  where, for example's sake, we have been asked what our favourite wine is I will just reply sequentially and just click on the last post... as I am *that* lazy to scroll back to the top but on a thread that maybe 3 pages long,I reaaaaally cant be bothered to go all the way back to reply to the OP! I can;'t see why that isn't acceptable or perhaps its better to say.. I hope that's forgivable ;)
If however I want to address comments made by someone in particular then I will click on their post to reply to and quote them (to clarify) or simply address them by name.

There is nothing more  than reading a thread where there are about (lets say) 6 posts giving advice or opinion and then a post that simply says "I think you'll find your wrong!".... and you (the reader) have no idea which of those 6 posts the comment relates to!

Hopefully this thread could be made into a 'sticky' Teri! Very useful for internet and forum first timers who mean no offense and must be mortified when they accidentally fall foul of this :)

Do you know what....how long have I been a member and never figured out how to do it! So ta!
- By newfiedreams Date 27.03.09 22:35 UTC
And thick long timers like me eh HG??;-)
- By newfiedreams Date 27.03.09 22:38 UTC
JG How do you remove the ("") please? just by removing it physically with backspace or delete or is it a very special trick thingy? Ta x
- By HuskyGal Date 27.03.09 22:46 UTC
You've lost me now Newf!!!
- By newfiedreams Date 27.03.09 22:49 UTC
Hehehe...if you look at my quoted reply above, at the end of the quote are 2 x " in brackets...like thus...("") at the end of JG's reply there are none of those...just the words at the end...got it for 'Quoting 101'!?? 'Quoting 102' starts next week! :-)
- By HuskyGal Date 27.03.09 22:54 UTC
OMG!!! *clouts Newf*

the ("") is what Astarte typed to show what the little quote box (bottom left of a persons post when you hit reply) looks like. You have obviously highlighted it when you highlighted to quote Astarte.

so if you reply to me and highlight this:

wow! look at that...no funny squiggles!

you'll find just that :)
- By HuskyGal Date 27.03.09 22:55 UTC
p.s I'm making some Horlicks d'you want some :-P
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 27.03.09 22:57 UTC

>JG How do you remove the ("") please?

Errrrmmmm..... I've never used the quote thing at the bottom because before my recent computer rebuild (smugly buffs fingernail on jumper) it didn't work, so I simply type > at the start then copy and paste the bit I want to quote, thusly:

>is it a very special trick thingy?

So, to answer that last bit, no!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 27.03.09 22:57 UTC

>I'm making some Horlicks d'you want some

- By HuskyGal Date 27.03.09 23:06 UTC Edited 27.03.09 23:10 UTC

>yeah but no but

if your doing it JG's way then you need to type the > first then paste the quoted bit... to get it to go brown :)

edited to say: nope! just tried it and either way >first or > after pasting still makes my text go brown.
