Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Breeding on consequetive seasons!
- By kingdom [gb] Date 27.03.09 09:06 UTC
Hi

I just wanted some advice please.  There's a guy who managed to import 2 dogs and 2 bitches in my breed.  He is a well known puppy farmer and we were warned about him at the beginning.

True to form, he bred from a bitch when she was 20 months who had no health checks whatsoever.  He used one of his own dogs who has subsequently been reported as having hereditary cataracts.  I've been in touch with the KC about this and there is an ongoing complaint because he has used the dog at stud twice more despite knowing that the dog has cataracts.

The little bitch he bred from had 11 puppies and were sold without endorsements on the pedigree and, I suspect, to anybody who would give him the money.  I was alerted to the fact that he was advertising again on the well known puppy farmers website so had a look yesterday.  To my horror he is advertising that this little bitch is again pregnant - and to his other dog!!  He is also advertising a litter from his other bitch to the dog that has the cataracts.  All the dogs are related - 3 have the same mother and the other bitch has the same grandmother as the other 3 but was bred to a litter sister of their mother.

This means that this horrible man has mated this little bitch on her next season and the puppies she had before are only 6 months old.  I'm absolutely devastated but the KC, despite knowing about the cataracts etc., and having a dosier about this man because he has been involved in lots of different breeds ie Bloodhounds, DDB, Bulldogs, Afghans, Pugs, Chi are doing nothing.

Does anybody know of the KC's stance on breeding from bitches on consequetive seasons.  I have had a look at their Code of Ethics and there is nothing on there about this.  However, there is a point that says not to breed if it is harmful to the dog or the breed - and this man is doing both!!!

This is a very new breed in the UK and the last thing we need is for the market to be flooded with these puppies.  He's also selling them at inflated prices.  It makes me so so sad!!

I'd be grateful of any advice.  I'm mindful to get back in touch with the KC about this.  I'm dealing directly with CK on this and the health problems in my breed that are being swept under the carpet.

Thanks again
Kingdom

If you are a LICENSED breeder you cannot breed from a bitch more than once in a year. If you are NOT, there is no such rule. As anyone breeding more than 4 litters a year has to be licensed, if you can find out if this person has bred more than that (BRS) you can report them to their local council -either for being unlicensed or for breeding from a bitch twice in 12 months.

The KC will do nothing about it, I had a very similar complaint re: breeding from bitches 5 months from previously litters. They would not follow my complaint up and did absolutely nothing about it and wrote to say so!. However, Marianne is correct, the Council is your first port of call here. I was lucky, he was a licensed breeder and the Council served him with a notice to say that they would not permit this practise and would remove his license if he continued. Contact his local Council, because even if he hasn't got a licence then he will be in trouble for not having one. Hopefully his Council will be as supportive to the complaint as the one I dealt with. Make sure you have as many facts and proof as you can, BRS, adverts  etc.
Good luck

That is because it does not break their rules on registration.  As you say this is a council matter not a KC one although the issue of the cataracts I feel does contravene their code and I hope they do take action on that.

I'm very concerned about the breeders/owners who sold this vile man these dogs, what is going on???

I too would head straight to the council and deal with this head on, this man needs to be stopped.
As for the KC yes they do need to do something about this and again i wouldn't let up. Not sure if you are on the committee of your said breed, if not then i would also get in touch with them as well, they may have more clout with the KC as well.

It is awful that such a rare breed in this country(if i am to believe you are in said breed from previous posts) can be over bred and bad unhealthy litters already being produced so readily. Is there really a call for this breed anyway to this level?

It upset me a lot when i saw a breed which has yet to get KC status in this country already being cross bred.

No.  If you are not a licenced breeder the KC do permit it.  Of course you still have to conform to their code and your breed club if you are a member.

(To white lilly) Don't forget a litter twice within 12 months doesn't have to be from consecutive seasons. (And not all bitches have seasons twice a year.) You can have a litter 364 days after the first and it's still within 12 months, hence the KC does not have such a rule.

Licenced breeders can only register one litter within 12 months from any bitch; the rule no longer applies to non-licenced breeders.

I totally agree with you on this one Sue, and I  find it unnerving  if it is the breed we are talking about. Is no breed safe :(

IMO they are totally unsuitable for the puppy farm market. They are so similar to my own breed but with more energy I would have thought they were unsuitable for a lot of people looking for a pet :(

thanku for clearing that up for me ! the reason i ask a lady i was talking to at training class , her bitch had a litter .Then her boy got to her when her hubby was in charge :( they both didnt know untill out popped 3 pups and she said she couldnt kc them as it was only 10months since last litter .

Not that there are any breeds suitable for the puppy farm market.

She still can't sign the forms as witnessing the mating.

No problem registering them if they are not required to hold a breeders license (bred more than four litters in any 12 month, etc).
