Topic Dog Boards / General / Entertainment during wet and windy days

I've been trying to think of things to keep my dog entertained when he is at home during the wet and windy days. Apart from his walks was trying to come up with ideas while he is inside.

He does like Kongs now providing i choose the right filling, if he can't get it out then he gives up. I thought about the puzzle games but i don't think that a Berner is going to fully understand one of those(not up to Springer mentality).
The odd bit of training is good, but apart from that i don't have any more ideas for a large dog who likes to learn but isn't the brightest spark in the box.
Those with large/giant breeds what do you do?

Our lot have been racing round the stubble fields in the wind, rain, they have to go out atleast 3 times a day to let off steam and keep me saine!!!
At night I take them to the woods, and they have decided to chase deer, rabbits and jump over fences, so its keeping them active and fit, and they sleep very well all night!! lol
I know its hard to keep them active through the day, esp when my OH in bed on N/S, and trying to keep 9+ dogs somedays quiet.

My boy is almost on complete rest right now after hurting his foot.. Silly boy, this makes it even harder to cope with a dog who wants to run about in a manic way chasing rabbits etc.

I still take the dogs out in the bad weather to run about, i don't mind walking in it, but when its too bad its trying to find something else for them to do, good weather they seem to calm down and chill out in it.

A game of hide and seek (easier if you have a bigger house)
Hiding treats under cones or something so dog has to work out which one its under
Topping up on some basic training
A kong filled with something yummy

Hopefully the wet weather wont last long but the above normally keep my dog amused and give his brain a little workout instead of his body

If ytou don't mind a mess, a box inside a box, inside a box, each one with a tasty treat in. Ripping up the boxes to get the treat.

Our Springer loved to play ball down the steps.  She would stand at the top of the stairs, drop the ball, and when it hit the bottom, she'd run down after it and bring it back up and start all over again.  Wouldnt work with a dog thats injured himself, but for when he is back to normal maybe.  All you have to listen to is dogs running up and down stairs.

Also, toilet paper rolls, Joy used to love them.

Fetch up and down the hallway.

Hope your boy feels better soon!

Ike does the same....... plays ball at the top of the stairs.
Drops it and it crashes down stairs he chases it....rushes upstairs and it is repeated.
until he get's bored with that game!
We play wham-it! Throw ball as hard as you can down the kitchen and hallway (it's all straight open plan) so it's
a good length to cover...... comes rushing back with it for you to repeat action.

I'll give the hide and seek a go, though he is not the best scent dog in the world and does give up quite readily.

As for the ball down the stairs even when better i won't be doing that, i'm sure its fine for smaller breeds but large breeds should never play on the stairs no matter what age i'm afraid.

As it is the weather is starting to get better and its now sunny outside, don't mind the wind, but with rain as well its nasty..
So much more to do outside when the weathers good.
