Just noticed that my previous post was locked so thought I'd just update you on what happened on Tuesday.

After lots of playing around there was still no joy.  I'd made up my mind that we should just go home and wait for next time when somebody more experienced was around to help and then he got on her back!!!  There wasn't a tie and he just fell out.  I think they call it a slip mating.  I don't hold out much hope of having puppies from that but you just don't know do you?

Anyway, after that I decided to just leave it.  I was so exhausted yesterday from the travelling and the mental stress of it all so spent the day just relaxing!!!

Thank you for all your help.  I'll keep you posted as to whether there are any puppies but I'm not holding my breath.

When he fell out was there a gush of fluid? If not, then he probably didn't ej*culate so the chances of puppies are minimal. If there was fluid escaping then there's a glimmer of hope.

I bet the dog's owner was cursing her husband for not being there to help, wasn't she?! I also bet she's going to learn how to manage a mating herself, in case the same situation happens again. :-)

Yes, there was fluid.  The thing is, it happened when we werent looking.  I'd given up hope and was getting packed up to go home when "hey presto!".  I'm trying not to build up my hopes and am of the opinion that "what will be, will be!".  I think we were both kicking ourselves for not being more experienced.  One thing's for sure, hubby will be there at the next union!  It just goes to show though that its not easy to get things just right.  Both were very willing but very very inexperienced and I think lacked confidence.  Fingers tightly crossed!!

just to say i had a 'blink and you missed it' slip mating 3 years ago and my girl had 2 puppies, so you never know! :)

I will keep my fingers crossed for you. On two occasions I have had a litter from a slip mating.

I did say PM me and I could advise you of someone who could help!  People have travelled from Sweden to him and it's well worth travelling quite some way to relieve the stress.

Sorry, I didn't get back to the thread until yesterday so didnt have a chance to pm!!!  I just have to wait and see.  Even if I had one puppy I would be delighted but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

One thing you may be able to advise me on.  Since this happened on Tuesday, which was her 13th day, she had a sort of bloody mucus on Wednesday and her season has stopped altogether now.  She doesnt have anything at all, apart from a little tiny bit of blood coloured mucus.  Is this normal or should I be worried and take her to the vet for a check up?

In my breed day 13 would still be early and a slip mating often indicates this too.

I can't remember when you got the blood test saying she was ovulating, but you should have kept trying for a proper mating for four days after this, after that she would have probably gone over.

If the dog did the stair climbing bit whilst mounted and was where he needed to be for more than a minute it is likely he will have delivered what was needed, if not then unlikely.

Has your bitch 'gone down' ie her vulva swelling gone? If so then yes her season is over if not she's now ready for mating - well that's the old fashioned way of doing it we always waited for the bleeding to stop as that's when they're most receptive for a sucessful litter.  I've had puppies from matings on day 5 right thru to day 19 just depends on the girls and when they ovulate slip matings are not unusual if your timings slightly off either way even with the most experienced animals.

My last litter the bitch was mated from day 18 to 20 a premate test on day 16 (we were beginning to wonder) showed she was approaching ovulation, a litter of 7 pups were born 60 days after the first mating.
