Hiya every1

I have neva been on anything like this before and just wundered if anyone could help me.
I have a 4 year old border collie cross and for about the last year she has been having fits where she froths form her mouth, her jaw shakes and she looks as if she is tring to run. It is very upsetting for the whole family. The thing is that she goes a whole month to 6 weeks without having 1 but then she will have about 10 i 24 hour.
The vet has put her on epiphen bt that doesnt seem to do much.

please can some1 help

thank u form antman

Sorry to hear about your dog's fits. That pattern is known as 'cluster fits'; the Canine Epilepsy website will have useful information for you.

I am so sorry to hear - one of ours used to have months between but would have onl the one fit.  I used ceramic bowls for food and water - no metal or plastic

She might need a higher dose of Epiphen, or your vet could try adding some Potassium Bromide. Hopefully that will stop the clusters your bitch is having. It is an upsetting thing to see, but your dog will probably know little about it. I would take her back to the vets sooner rather than later. She probably needs her blood testing anyway, that will tell you if her medication is within the theraputic range, and also how her liver, thyroid etc is doing.
I am sending you a link to this site; it's a mine of information:

How long has she been on Epiphen? My dog is on Epiphen together with Genitrix KBR and my vet told my I must give it several weeks (at least 6-8) before we could see the proper effect as it needs to build up. It took a full year on medication before he became more or less a normal dog again. After the first couple of months the fits stopped but he would still have small episodes where he would just sit and stare into a wall for instance, and he turned aggressive toward the other dogs. That has now all stopped I'm pleased to say.

hiya thankyou for your reply she has been on it for about 5 months now the worst thing about it is that she seemed back to normal and then the otherday she had adout 16 in one day and she looked so weak like she would jst give up. Glad to here all is ok with your dog tho always gud to here .

If she is having multiple fits in a day you need to take her to a vet ASAP.  Cluster seizures can kill.  The vet can give medications which will bring the seizures under control.

hi,

i expect your already aware of the effects of food on certain illnesses, but thought it was worth a post just in case.

i know of a bearded collie who has quite severe epilepsy, being prescribed epiphen and potassium bromide. his owners fed him bakers for years, unfortunately not knowing that it contains a shed load of colourants/additives etc. ok for your average dog if needs must, but not the best for any dog with even the remotest sensitivity/illness. anyho, they changed his food to james wellbeloved, which is hypo-allergenic with no artificial colours or preservatives etc,  and the number and frequency of his fits more than halved.

obviously your case is more acute, but it may help a bit.

good luck!

(just an aside, but i would say that personally, id recommend burns as opposed to wellbeloved, it does exactly the same thing, but burns have really good ethical policies, and can provide a less expensive alternative to prescribed diets)
