Hi - we have a 13 month old male golden retriever who is "perfect" according to the vet (and us of course).  My only slight concern is that we are in the process of changing him over to the adult version (from junior) of the Royal Canin for Large Breeds.  He has always had slight strong smelling poo, but perfectly formed.  Since I've been starting the changeover, it seems to be getting even more smelly (still good consistency - can't believe I'm actually typing this!).  Is this normal or is it the type of food.  He's been brought up on Royal Canin from puppy (breeder fed it and recommended it).  He's developed perfectly on it - his weight chart over the first year looked like a series of steps.  I don't think this is me and my OH being super-sensitive - even the puppy trainer thought it was rather smelly (admittedly this was when he was about four months old).  Any ideas?

I tried royal canin for a while after the problems of supply occured with Nutro , I didnt like it myself it gave all my girls bad wind <<phew>> and the whole family sufffered, I decided to go with Arden Grange and the wind stopped but I cant remember it being extra smelly with the other food...

Fit and fertile have a supplement which also helps control  the smelly poo http://www.fitandfertile.com/shop/misc-products/life-stages-4.html I have used it and found the coat (I have long coated breed) was fabulous .

ALTHOUGH a good food really doesnt require you to supplement ,I gave it to my bitch after she had her puppies to keep her coat in good condition.

Thanks.  I'll look into Arden Grange - remember seeing other posts mentioning this.

Hi Goldenz,

I used to feed my Malamute on RC Large Breed but her poos were really stinky too and there was rather a lot of them! (Don't you think you seem to talk about poo a lot when you're a dog owner ;-)) I put her onto Arden Grange lamb & rice and although I don't go around smelling my dogs poos, I do pick them up from the garden and they don't smell anywhere near as bad!

rc gave both my dogs,a boxer and a jack russell an upset stomach. for the past month ive been feeding gilpa trinkets with tripe, this seems to be suiting the pair, because the poo no longer stinks, its firm and both dogs are looking great.but best of all, both dogs are only pooing twice a day.
