my yorkie has just had 6 pups yesterday i am not a breeder and some advice on
her behaviour would be good she is panting alot. is this ok, i am keeping her room to warm could this be causing her to pant. and yes i am aware i should know this before i get pulled down again by certain people
Admin Edit

If the room is too hot she will pant more, just keep it comfortable (I keep mine in the living room with us with the heat as we always kept it, they are now 4 weeks and 2 days old, I have always done this). Check her temp. make sure she isn't running one. Did she contain any of her placenta's or were they all delivered, and did she deliver all the pups? Congratulations on your six pups, wow thats a big litter for a yorkie. How many females and males did she have?

congrats on you brood:d:d
our bitch amber had the same reactions for about the first 4 days it was normally just after feeding them & could last for about an hour
but if you are concerned consult a vet we did & had her X-rayed to check their was nothing left inside her,but she was given the all clear so it was probally just getting to hot

Suzke
with reference to your query about your male dog.....KEEP HIM AWAY....I have seen bitches start to kill pups because another dog was near them and she got very aggitated. There is no need for him to go anywhere near her or the pups until they are a few weeks old.

Daddy gets the bad vibes at this time he has done what he needed to do. the panting is normal so i would not worry as long as she seems ok otherwise. the room is warm and she may not be used to this. plus when they have the pups they are totally knackered. so good luck and keep up the good work.

suzki had 4 boys and 2 twin girls 3,1/2ozs each and the boys were 7oz 5oz 5oz 4oz all placentas except one which came half out not sure if she got it the vet said she probably would, and not to worry if she didnt that it would do no harm, our house is quite warm due to my youngest boy

Hi suzke, dont want to worry you, but if the last afterbirth didnt come away and she didnt eat it, it WILL cause problems. It will eventually start to rot inside and cause infection. Did the vet give her a "clear out" injection?

philippa, thanks for the advice she hasnt seen a vet i rang when she had the pups and she said not to worry and only if she started to seem poorly to bring her in and she would give her an antibiotic injection and one to close down the womb, i will take her on monday or do you think i should take her 2morrow, and she is very close to the pups, would it be a good idea to take the pups to the vets with her

Hi suzke,Most vets will give a clear out injection automatically if there is any doubt that all the afterbirths have been passed. Basically what happens is if the afterbirth starts to rot, the bitch will get an infection, causing a very high tempreture, and the infection gets passed through the milk to the pups. I really am not trying to scare you...honestly, but if you are really not sure about the last afterbirth, get her to the vets tomorrow for a clear out, and all will be fine. Please dont mind me saying, but your vet was way out of order to say that it wouldnt do any harm!! ;)

dollface is this a big litter how many is normal and what do you think to the weights of them

I don't know I just thought it sounded like a big litter for a Yorkie since they are small dogs. My boston had six but we lost one 3 days later and they were a fair weight to. Boston's usually have 2 to 4 pups thats what other breeders told me and between 4 to 5 ounces, mine were 6 to 10 ounces. I never knew that Yorkie's can have that many pups and that big for such a tiny dog (yorkshire terrier, am I right or thinking of a totally diferent breed?) Well learn something knew everyday. As long as they are all healthy and mom is doing good I think you and mom did great. :) Congrats on the little ones. OOooh they must be so cute, I just love tiny newborns (this is my last litter :( ), enjoy them they don't stay little long.

Hi there!
My pups were born the week before yours - we had 7 (Aussies). They are all weaned now - Mum may pop in for 10 minutes or so - just to check them out and then she jumps out PDQ as they STILL would like a drink from Mummy!
They are starting to leave home as from this weekend - the 1st one is going on Saturday - ahhh - we shall miss her!!

I never let mine leave until they were 7 1/2 weeks (boston terrier), since in that time mom teaches pups how to play, and they also learn alot about play with their siblings. I have heard of breeders keeping the smaller breeds until they are 10 weeks.
ttfn :)

Depending on the country you reside in there may be laws for a minimum age to sell puppies. In France and the USA it is forbidden to sell (or give away) puppies less than 8 weeks old. But for a toy breed you'd better wait untill they are at least 10 w/o, 12 better (which allows them to be fully vaccinated).

Hello!! I live in the US. I am not certain of laws which restrict the placement of pups at a certain age. We do, however, keep our yorkies until they are 12 weeks old. This helps to get them off to a wonderful start. We can be well on our way to housetraining with the pups crate trained and litterbox trained. We can begin early obedience. You are also able to control incidents of hypoglycemia and make certain that the pups are eating well before going to their new homes. I believe anyone who sells a Yorkshire Terrier at 8 weeks is being remiss in their responsibility to the puppies and the new owners. Just my two cents...and that is about all it is worth ;).
We had a litter January 09th. Three girls, one boy...their weights were boy (5.6), girl (5.3), girl (5.1), girl (6.1). Many dog breeds double their birth weights at one week...my litters usually take about a week and a half to double. But all are thriving and wonderful.
Mom still pants quite a bit. When I notice her panting, I check the temp of the whelping box and the room itself. Our goal is to keep the room comfortable at about 70 degrees (give or take five degrees) and add a pet warmer for supplement heat. This seems to work wonderfully. If the pups are all spread out, they are too warm. They should be huddled together. If they are literally "Piled" on top of one another, they are much too cold. Sometimes mom just needs a minute or two away from the pups to cool down after nursing. A few minutes out for a bathroom break and a treat seem to help a bunch.
Hope this helps someone a bit :).

That is interesting Christiane about the rate of weight gain, as I have found it takes more like 10 days to double weoght too, and the info I had read had me worrying needlessly with first couple of litters. So much so that my mentors told me to throw out the scales and go on how pups seemed in themsleves!
