Chin up! You have acted quickly and antibiotics can sometimes work "little miracles" . Keeping your pups hydrated , warm and clean is all you can do.Hope they pick up soon.

- By WENDYD [gb] Date 22.03.09 17:59 UTC
Been following your post. Everything crossed here too, hope they continue to improve x
- By Vanhalla [gb] Date 22.03.09 19:12 UTC
Hi White Lilly - glad things are improving.  It's a bit scary when things like this happen, and it seems to happen so quickly.
I'm concerned about you too.  Don't forget to take some time to rest when you can.  You are probably very tired, and that can make things seem even worse.  I know I've been totally wacked with the litters I've either helped with or had myself, and it's easy to get so exhausted that coping becomes difficult.
Sending positive thoughts to you, the babes and their Mum *hugs White Lilly*

thanku all for your kind words ,i mean that from the bottem of my heart i am totally exhausted but not going to give in :) ...ive started giving honey and water as thay are dehydrated ther coats are dull and course and when i pinch their neks it does stay but i will get there , i just wish i could get mum to drink more :( xx
- By ShaynLola Date 22.03.09 19:23 UTC
I have no experience with puppies but honey shouldn't be given to infants because of the risk of botulism...I would just worry that the pups are also at risk?  Hopefully someone with more experience will be able to say if honey is safe or not?
- By gwen [gb] Date 22.03.09 19:32 UTC
Hi,  if you feel they are dehydrated then get them onto a rehydration solution straight away - either Lectade or Dioralyte.  You need to get them rehydrated before they can start benefitting from the milk again.  Just my opinion, but if they have reached this stage and you are so worried, I would be concentrationg on getting the fluids into they by hand, and when you have them rehydrated go straight onto bottle feeding to keep the good work going, then you can concentrate on Mum without having to panic about babes. By all means keep giving them little drinks from Mum to keep her milk going and get the colostrum into them (I am assuming they are very new) but consider this as an extra to the main bottle feed.  Good luck.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 22.03.09 20:21 UTC
Hi gwen ,i have rehydration support by royal canin ?? and also have dioralyte so i will start 1 of them ...mum is fine no temp and is feeding very well she just dont want to drink much , pups are only 3days old , pups dont have the runs now thank goodness ,i have whelpi too .

thanku gwen xx
- By furriefriends Date 22.03.09 22:43 UTC
Glad things seem to be a bit better, perhaps some honey in water will encourage Mum to drink ? otherwise I would try any type of fluid  for Mum and then a stiff drink or two for you. !
- By Dill [gb] Date 22.03.09 22:59 UTC
Try giving mum some Lactol, it's the only reason I had it in :)   you can also soak mum's food before giving it to her and that way she'll be getting more liquid, if she has wet food just mix some warm water with it.  You'll be surprised how many ways there are to sneak liquids into a bitch ;)  Don't forget tho, at this stage she won't leave the pups no matter how hungry she is, you'll have to offer it to her in the whelping box while you hold the bowl for her ;)

Don't worry too much about getting her to drink loads, the pups won't need large amounts of milk just yet.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 22.03.09 23:58 UTC
thanks furrifriend :) xx

Hi dill ,im going back to vets tomorrow ,thats the thing shes happy to leave them :!( and seems very stressed i think she might need a calcium jab ? lots of panting ...she will only eat her food dry :( even put some meat into water to see if she would drink it to get to the meat but nooo !! she noy drink lactol ...goats milk ...evap milk...honey water ...sugar water...and the list goes on ...but if i cup the water with my hand she as a small lick so i have to keep doing that !! or she will lick it off my finger ...this isnt like her at all so i will see what vet says tomorrow xx
- By JeanSW Date 23.03.09 00:21 UTC

> lots of panting

The lots of panting is perfectly normal.  Hope things go well with the vet, let us know how you get on.  Good Luck.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.03.09 02:47 UTC Edited 23.03.09 02:50 UTC
Are you adding loads of water to Mums food, and feeding it to her in her whelping box by holding the bowl.  None of my bitches would choose to leave the whelping box in the first few days and would not drink or eat if I didn't give it to them, and I need to drag them out to toilet.

Just read your further posts and if Calcium deficiency is the issue then this is an emergency as Eclampsia can kill.
- By PippaJ [gb] Date 23.03.09 08:51 UTC
Hi Joanne,

let us know how things are this morning and after the vet.
I have everything crossed for you and pups, what a worry x x x
- By Carrington Date 23.03.09 09:27 UTC
I can remember whilst I was 'in training' for breeding myself helping out my foundation breeder, she had a bitch whom just would not eat or drink unless the breeder fed her by hand, she was like that for most of the first week, she had all of her puppy food soaked to give her water, and was given a cup of goats milk with 2 egg yolks lightly aired, morning and evening, (I continue to do this myself for the first two weeks after whelping) whelpi, lactol all have the same effect, take the bowl to her and  hold it up to her for the first few licks then sit with her whilst she drinks, feed her by hand the soaked puppy food, she needs extra liquid. You may well need to pamper her like this for a while.  The pups are only 3 days in, she has eaten the placenta's (has she?) her body will be fine for a while, but do your best to get that extra liquid in, soaked puppy food is an excellent way to do that. :-)
- By Crespin Date 23.03.09 09:54 UTC
What about canned food?  Its high in moisture, so if mom will eat it, its worth a try. Also add some cottage cheese, it seems to help.
- By St.Domingo Date 23.03.09 10:11 UTC
What about trying a weak bowl of tea , maybe you need to try something different to get her to try it .
- By white lilly [gb] Date 23.03.09 10:15 UTC
her food and water is in whelping box all the time she is eating !!!!!! i have said this in my post!!! sorry if this sounds nasty i dont want to come across like thats :) ...i dont need to havd feed her :) i did my other bitch she wouldnt eat :( ...
back to this girl ...she loves her dry food ,,,she WILL NOT eat it soaked.....so now ive changed her food to natures harvest and added some milk to it and shes eaten some this morning ..i will still give her some pro plan as she loves this food and i will keep trying with the milk .
