Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Vizsla off his food ?
- By vermonta [gb] Date 21.03.09 22:07 UTC
Hi

Just wondering if anyone can offer any advice, we have a 2 year old vizsla, we have only had him a few months and so far he's been brilliant. but the last few days he's been off his food. He normally scoffs his food down right away, (Dried Food) however 2 days ago he didnt wouldnt touch it in the morning and in the evening he just picked at it a little. Yesterday he ate as normal but today again he wont eat ?
My wife was worried, thinking he might be ill, so she bought him a tin of dog food which he ate straight away ?

Any idea why he may be acting like this or what we should do ? We dont really want to change his food over to tinned as we also have a 2 year old Lab, so it's easier to keep them on the same diet.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Vermonta
Why dont you mix a little tinned meat with his complete, then he gets the best of both worlds.

I also have one of mine that wont eat complete on its own,and mix wet with it.
Its sometimes better to compromise a little than for your boy to start to drop weight.
Just reduce his complete slightly if adding some wet to it.

yes I agree, my dogs before, I went raw, needed some tinned meat or tripe mixed in with their dried to make them eat it.

Could be his not got the appitite at the moment.

I've had dogs in the past who haven't been hungery where there's been a sudden rise in the tempreture and don't eat for a day or two and started being picky.  They soon picked up again when they got hungery.  The fact that he ate wet food is because it smells better and seems more appealing to alot of dogs.  bit like me and chocolate.  I mgiht not be hungery so won't eat the ham sandwhich but give me a chocolate bar. although not hungery, will still eat it! :-D

Is he drinking normally and does he seem himself?  I would not give him wet food (He will think if he doesn't eat he will get something better!) and give him a couple of days of his dry food to see if he will eat.  also a trip to the vets won't do any harm if he starts looking under the weather, just for a check over :)

I would have thought it's just the weather and I know of some Vizsla's that arn't the best eaters in the world anyway.

You could try worming, and I would add some raw mince into the food, you can pour biling water over mince and then drain off water if you dont like the idea of raw. We feed Royal Canin but we always give our vizsla meat of some sort into their food...
