Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / feeding after c section

My daughter in law's small toy breed had puupies this afternoon by c section. Mum is still groggy, 1 pup is suckling other 2 aren't yet. How long can she go before trying with bottle?

Those puppies URGENTLY need colostrum from Mum.  The bottle is a last resort.  Stay with the bitch, ensure the 2 not suckling are regularly attached to the back teats, keep at it.  You can't leave her anyway, she needs you there all day and night for some time now.

Has the owner read "The Book Of The Bitch", she really needs to.

I wouldn't even be considering bottle feeding, I would be worrying about just how long they have been left without what they need most.

Things are much better this morning. Pups are feeding, lying quiet and contented, Mum is cleaning them. Think it was a bit of panic set in after section. Once she expressed a bit and got it into to pups mouth, they became interested in sucking. She does have the book but at the time just got a bit anxious. Thanks for your reply it was appreciated.

So pleased that she was able to express enough milk for pups to get the taste of it!  When a bitch has a C-section it is normal for them not to be as attentive.  They are sore, dopey, and in pain.  Once the natural maternal instincts kick in, they tend to ignore their own discomfort and get on with the job.  In the meantime, we just need to be around to give them all the help we can!  :-)  Glad things worked out.

after my girl had her c -section we stayed with her all the time and ensured the pups gpt latched on and we had to toilet the pups as mum was having none of it.
