Topic Dog Boards / General / Legal Breed in the Uk?
- By triona [gb] Date 18.03.09 21:27 UTC Edited 19.03.09 14:22 UTC
I was just pondering if this was a legal breed within the uk as I thought that all "Wolf type dogs" or breeds that were VERY close to the oringinal wolf was considered a dangerous/ wild animal and would have certain legislative sanctions put upon it.

Found this which hopefully explains the confusion.

The breed was introduced to the U.K in 2002. The first litter was born in 2003 and was registered by the UK Kennel Club, but after contact with DEFRA the Kennel Club withdrew all registration papers as DEFRA classified the Czechoslovakian wolfdog as a dangerous wild animal. This led to some confusion as breeders have letters from the UK Kennel Club inviting the breed to the UK and giving them advice on what to do to get this breed recognised within the U.K. Yet further confusion was again added to this saga when a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog was imported directly via DEFRA, where all paperwork had been checked prior to their importation. DEFRA also has confirmed two Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs have been granted with pet passports and therefore travel freely to Europe and back with no problems. As of 2008 DEFRA have confirmed that any dog 3 or more generations removed from pure wolf now no longer comes under the Dangerous Wild Animals act and therefore no longer needs a special licence to keep. The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog and the Saarlooswolfhond are both now no longer classified as 'Dangerous Wild Animals'

£1500.00 for a non registered dog!!  I wonder what legislations they are putting on them re breeding etc?

If they come from the breeder that I think, they actually come with a contract that states that they must NOT be neutered/spayed.

makes you wonder what type of person wants an animal that only has to be 3 generations from wild?
Surely it would never be allowed off the lead? be suitable with any other dog or animal within the home? be suitable around children even whilst they are supervised?
And how would a semi wild animal manage living in a house being left alone for periods?

"next litter due summer 09"  sounds like the dogs are a money making breed machine. Would steer well clear!

Yes Freds Mum,  my thoughts exactly ,if owner has one bitch and one dog and going to be breeding at every season then god help the poor bitch.
I am going back on to the epupz site to lodge an advert complaint as they are listed as German shepherds which must surely fall under false advertising under the distance selling regulations.

I have a feeling I might know who this 'breeder' is but not 100% sure.  If so then I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

I don't think it is the right dog for your average person to own in this country.  However not everyone should be tarred with the same brush.  A friend of mine who lives in France owns Sarloos (they are meant to be GSD x wolf) but hers haven't had any GSD bred into them for generations now, only wolves).  She has a male and female and they live with a great dane x.  They live in the house - out in the middle of nowhere and they do run offlead - however she has brought a wood with a house in the middle and her dogs can run offlead there without coming across other dogs or mainly hunters in hunting season.

They are lovely animals but need time to get used to people - not for your average pet home at all.  The Cezch (sp) wolf dogs are meant to be easier to handle and more dog like.

Sorry admin was not meant to be advert in any way,as we were talking about wolfdogs which are listed as german shepherds in epupz advert and I was going to contact epupz to retify matter I put my affix after my name simply to identify that I am a G.S.D. owner for benefit of readers, wont happen again, if need be to identify breed interest in future I shall simply say G.S.D. owner

Hi Freds Mum, have contacted epupz to enquire about there policy on accepting adverts for pups from bitches bred in consecutive seasons and fact that to list a check. wolfdog as a G.S.D. in advert may well be classed as a misleading  advertisement under the distance selling regulations enforcable by trading standards.
I await there response and will post it in this thread on reciept.

Legislation on Wolf Hybrids (F1,F2...etc ect) Has recently changed (Nov 2008) which has meant Saarloos, Chez wolfdogs and any other permeations thereof are now no longer 'underground' (being kept in homes when prior to this they had to be penned and have a license) See below.
DEFRA amendment - Wolf Hybrids etc

Arguments regarding whether there is a place for these dogs in the UK or not aside, I can't see where it states that the bitch will be bred on consecutive seasons.  It only says that another litter is expected, not that it is from the same bitch.  Besides, if I understand correctly, this breed only comes into season once per year.

I think rather than false advertising (as the ad states 'pure bred Czech Wolfdogs') you'll find that there are no catagories on *that* site for some of the 'newer' breeds.
I know for example that When 'Eurasiers' started to be bred in the UK, some breeders were advertising them under the Chow-Chow heading, as there was not one for the Eurasier. (and so could not be uploaded anywhere)

I think thats possibly the explanation......

I must confess regardless of which breed it is I'm really dismayed by the prolific churning out of 'new breeds' by some UK 'Breeders' many of whom have in excess off 4 litters in their first year (albeit different dogs.... but many are at each season of one bitch :()

- By Isabel Date 19.03.09 19:37 UTC
Ah, there is no Chez Podengo only Rue Podengo.

Hi Huskygal,
They are actually headed in advert under German Shepherds, other dogs on site are variously listed as g.s.d/rottie-gsd/husky-etc. crosses
so obviously ability is available on site for advertiser to choose what name animal appears under, dont think any site would offer you a list of ALL POSSIBLE
X-breeds as well as a list of purebred options.
Like yourself I am not in favour of the churning out of all these "designer" dogs which after all are no more than X-bred dogs which have the possibility
of introducing seperate health issues from two breeds and MAY be inter/closely bred in an attempt to "quick fix" type and are often sold to public at
similar or even greater prices than purebred and registered animals to make a quick buck.
Epupz have been back to me and asked for link to advert, so await further response from them in due course

Any news?
- By stan berry [gb] Date 24.03.09 15:44 UTC
Hi Freds Mum,
Had initial response saying they view such matters quite seriously and asking for link to advert/advertiser so they can look into it.
I await there further response when they have done so.

Stan
