Does anyone know if most of the tummy bugs that seem to be very prevailant at the moment, could be all related to Campylobactor, which is very contagious?
Which areas of the country does it seem to be striking the most and how many known dogs are getting upset tums?
i would be very interested to find out, so if any of you CDers can enlighten me I would be grateful.
The reasons that I am keen to know is because Safi has the runs again.
Started on Saturday after a lovely long walk to our usual haunts.
We live in York by the way, just so we can get an idea of where this bug is lurking about. we might be able to get a tab on it if we know of areas where it is.
I thought it was her Colitis starting up again. Me thinking I'd caused it by giving her some Nature Diet (chicken) in with her Hill's d/d. Only an 1/8th of the tray. After been on Salazopyrin, again, for 3 days she is still no better, so I am now thinking she has picked up either a tummy bug or its the Campylobactor rearing its ugly head again. She is fine in herself, just is squatting a lot thinking she needs to go but passing nothing and if she does its very runny. I starved her yesterday and have now started her on 4 small meals of i/d and some cooked mackerel and scrambled egg + I've got her on one Baytril a day(antibiotic for the next 5 days)
So I would be very interested to know if there is a bug doing the rounds, which she has picked up. Other dog is fine but then again, always is. bless her. Or is it just within Safi herself?
I haven't had her out since Monday as I know its very contagious and don't want to pass it onto other dogs if I can help it.
ps She has just come into season today and did also wonder if her hormones could cause her to have an upset tum?? It never has before, but ya never know.
Any info regardign area's and this bug thing, from any of you's out there would be really appreciated. yet again ;o)
Thanks

Anndee, a month or so ago my 2 dogs had the tummy bug - it was awful - they had the runs like I have never seen before :-( I never did find out what it was, but I posted on CD and a couple of other posters' dogs had it too but they were scattered about the country. The bug lasted with my dogs for one day, they had the runs constantly and so I starved them for 24hrs and then fed them 2 small meals of white fish with plain white rice, and they were gradually fine within 2 days of having the bug. Megan had it first on the Wednesday and then Pixie had it on the Friday. Our other dog didn't get it at all - which was very odd - but she is know for having a cast iron stomach. I kept my dogs in the house while they had it as I didn't want the bug passed on to any other dogs.
This was last month I think - and we are in the North West in Cheshire.

Thanks for that info AliceC. Its interesting to see just how widespread these things are.
Hope I can clear my girl up as quick, but somehow I doubt it knowing her!;o)

our Boston had a upset stomach the Sunday before last we took her to the vets as we thought she had eaten too much of the rabbit droppings that are all over the downs, the vet examined her, i told the vet that she was coming into season and she said that a lot of bitches do get upset stomachs due to a increase in hormones and some can even develope colitis due to stomach cramps which stress out the bitch. The vet gave Mabel a pain killing injection which knocked her out for the day (peace) she had also had some antibiotics the next she still was a bit loose but there after was fine except coming into season, our Boxer is fine so whatever Mabel had was localised to her.hopefully your girl will soon be on the mend.

my dog had a tummy bug last week, was terrible runny poo, blood in the poo and just not herself, and has vomiting. took her the vet and she had 2 injections and 3 tins of bland food and paste to put on it or give to her. my other dog never caught it though, well as of yet she hasnt and both seem fine in themselves now

Thank you all for your reply's.
I understand if you don't want to put where you are located, but to maybe help scale things down, are either of you anywhere near to York, North Yorkshire?
thanks again for your input.

Anndee, no problem. I hope your poor girl is on the mend soon - maybe it is the same thing mine had and she will be ok again in a few days. Its horrible isn't it though seeing them so ill and feeling helpless :-(
Sending hugs to your girl for a speedy recovery !! xx

Hi All.
Thanks for all your concerns. i am pleased to say that Safi is seeming much better today. she did have me up 4 times in the night between 11pm and 3am. In the end I just wedged the back door open and left her to it!!!!!! :o) I need my sleep!! Well certainly beauty sleep. It ain't doing much good though ;o))))
Things are certainly improving thoughwith Safi, so thats good.
Re the poorly tums, these bugs certainly aren't isolated are they? We seem to be spread about all over the country and yet upset tums are occuring all over.
I wonder why dogs are getting so many upset tummys lately, when their digestive system is usually able to cope with rotting flesh and manky bones etc. Most strange.
Thank you to you all for giving me some feedback anyway. Its been most informative, and I shall ask the vet when i see her on Monday if there is an epidemic of tummy bugs in our area.
Thanks again

Hi
just wondering if there's anyone from Wales with the tummy bug problem - Gower area? our youngest girl started with it about a week ago and 3 days later passed it to our older girl. did the 'starving for a day' thing yesterday which seems to have helped but have had messy nights since the outset. what on earth is causing it - thought at first Ruby had eaten a slug it was so explosive but after she'd passed it on realised that not possible. have read all the posts and am going to try Dorwest Tree Bark - would just like to know where its come from and why?

We live 10 miles North of York but our pup got a horrible runny tummy when we went on holiday and left her in Harogate (with her mum who was fine). The vet was querying campylobactor but actually within a day of getting her home she settled down and has been fine since. I think it was either stress at us being away or walking in unfamiliar places but the Harrogate vet did say it is ripe at the moment.

a friend of mine in Scotland had her boy to the vet as he was extremely ill a couple of days after crufts.

Thanks again for all your responses. Safi was on antibiotics for 4 days and she improved almost straight away going onto them. I am pleased to say that she is doing alright now. I also would like to know where all these tummy bugs are coming from and why are so many dogs picking them up??
On a different thread, i have put her onto Protexin Pro-Balance food. I shall keep her on that for a week as its got probiotics in with it.
