We have rescued a rotti bitch who is now 2 years old. She appears to be either sick or have diahorrea everytime she has meat - has anyone ever heard of this before? We now feed her Burns fish and rice which she is good on but the slightest bit of meat or a meat deritive will make her sick. Any advise???? Thanks

She does seem to have an intolerance but if you have found a food to suit I would just stick to that.  Any more experimenting seems unecessary and likely to lead to further upsets so I would leave it at that :-)

If she does well on that, then I would stick to it.

We have a vegan dog due to an animal protein allergy. He has been on a vegan diet for almost three years and is doing very well!

Many thanks for your reply. How did you find out what the allergy was? Did you do tests at the vets or by process of elimination yourself?

It was coincidence really... Flash was very ill with food poisoning. He was on just rice and egg, which made him better. I then started adding chicken as you do, and he went back to bloody diarrhea again. I did this a couple of times and then tried other meats too with the same result. In the end, I decided to put him on a vegetarian food for a while to then reintroduce meat later. During those weeks however I noticed that all his dandruff had gone and his coat became shiny, which I had never managed before! Every time he got hold of meat, the dandruff came back and the coat went dull again.
Later that same year, I also made the connection between cheese and egg and Flash's bad behaviour... once I cut that out, I had a different dog! Whenever he got hold of something he shouldn't, the bad behaviour came back... (to this day, though nowadays he can tolerate very small quanitities of animal protein without going into la la land, though the dandruff still comes back).
