Topic Dog Boards / General / Irish Gaelic Name Pronounciation Help or Suggestion?
- By Jetstone Jewel [ca] Date 17.03.09 17:22 UTC
Here's the story.  A wonderful lady on another dog forum I frequent has taken in a rescue Lab who turns out to be pregnant and possibly will whelp today, St. Patrick's Day.  She's only had the dog a week.  Why no one at the rescue facility, or even her own Vet, guessed the dog is pregnant is thought to be due to the poor creature's emaciated condition.

Anyway, we are all very excited and many of us have suggested names and stupid me looked up the Irish Gaelic word for SURPRISE and came up with Ionadh.  Stupid because I didn't know how to say it but I have searched and I think it is pronounced OON UH.  Not a very attractive sound, if you ask me.  But is that correct?  Or would you like to make another suggestion of an Irish name that might be suitable for a surprise boy puppy?  She says she might keep a male.

horrible name for a puppy.  Buy a book of Irish baby names and you will find so many beautiful names and their pronunciations and meanings.
My lovely GSDs are called Uisneach (pronounced Ishnuck) and Kemoc (pronounced Keymock)

The name you have, in the way you have pronounced it is actually a female name in Ireland, though spelt differently.

Like the person before has said do a search of baby names, this may be a better option. I love to name Daigan for a boy, not sure about it being for a dog, but met a handsome man a few years ago with that name and loved it.

i think its Oooh-nah which is a girls name or Iona (I-own-a) maybe?. Personally i like it :)

our youngests kennel name is Ula (Oooh-la)

I also like Sorcha (Seer-sha) (my we cousins name), Niamh (Nee-v), Maeve (May-v) and Liadan for girls and oh, loads of nice irish boys names! Diarmid (Dear-mid), Cormack, Sean, Fionn (believe this is both sexes?)

Thanks all.  The lady has visited a new Vet, who has X-rayed, and now it is thought Mom dog is about 50 days along.  So it looks like they won't be Saint Patty's pups after all.  There appear to be at least 7 pups and her Vet has assured her that it doesn't look like any huge big dog is the father, a concern she had.  The extra time will allow her to get a bit more good food into the dog too, another concern.  A nearby breeder is on standby to help with the whelping.  So far, so good.

Make sure your volume is turned up and you'll hear Frank Mc Court pronouncing the names for you  :D

My son has an Irish name :)  Daughter would have but we didn't like the pronunciation of the name so we chose an approximation ;)

Love the name Finn for a pup :-D

"My lovely GSDs are called Uisneach (pronounced Ishnuck)"

That would depend on which Gaelic dialect a person is speaking.
Even within Ireland, 3 very distince dialects are in use, add to
that the Scots version ... it can become a very different thing
alltogether.

My latest is called Kyra, pronounced Keera. From the Gaelic, Ciara, meaning little black one. There were some lovely names there.

I did find the baby names of Ireland site.  It is wonderful to be able to HEAR the pronounciation.  I think I need another dog just so I can use one of those names.  :)

It is hoped the puppies will make their appearance this weekend.  That would be really good for the people who have volunteered to help this lady.  I'll update when the wee mites are safely here.

Five puppies arrived safely March 31, with the last one being in the wee hours of April 1, I think.  2 black and white, one brown and white, two brown.  Mom is a yellow Lab of unknown parentage, being a rescue.  No one has any idea who the dog was.  I think one brown and the brown and white are girls.  It's a huge long thread and I did not go back to check.  Now we are all trying to guess the breed mix, something that probably won't be evident till they are about a year old, if ever.
