Topic Dog Boards / Health / Stiffness in leg as a result from excercise.

Hiya, just wondering if anyone has any ideas as to how I can ease Bo my 5yr old rotti's stiffness in her back leg, it's happened before in her front leg. It started last year and we took her to the vets, who said it was like a strain and to ease up on her exercise, we were given metacam for her, after a few days it eased up, but got bad again a few weeks later, again the vet prescribed metacam. It means Bo can't be exercised on or off lead daily, in the past I have tried walking her everyday with short walks of 5mins then try to slowly build it up but its to much for her, she of course is out in the garden whenever she wants/needs, she can now only really go out about 2 or 3 times a week which she is ok with, these are 1 or 2 very short walks and then a longer one which she's been coping with very well. Today she and Fudge our pup went for their usual 30-40 mins walk off lead and now her leg is very stiff, she is not whining in pain (sometimes she does when putting weight on it) but limping quite alot, she will be going to the vets as soon as I can get an appointment for her, which will probably around this time tomorrow, but I just wondered if there was anything I could do to make her a bit more comfy and to help with the stiffness in the meantime. Would be grateful if anyone has any suggestions, thanks.

Thank you, she is a little better today but still cant weight bare on the leg properly, she has vets tonight.

> hydrotheapy

I have thought about this before, I will ask tonight I think it could have a positive effect, as with your girl.

The difference in  mine is amazing she could hardly weight bare before but now is putting more weight on her leg , also not having to have pain killers apart from the day she has been swimming

Only annoying thing is the insurance does not cover it

Good luck

Just an update, Bo has cruciate ligament damage, it is stretched and she is on total rest for a minimum of 10 days, she has been given metacam again, and we will discuss hydrotherapy further on our next visit in 10 days unless of course she gets any worse.
Thanks again

Same as mine then , She has been on rest for months, was prescribed metacam but it was not touchig her, she had a course of weekly injections which helped  and also changed her pain relief and now has had four swims

Thankfully she does not seem to bothered about not going out but soon loks forward to sat am to go swiming

Good luck with it all

I am glad we avioded surgery and tried this plan first

The swimming has really helped though i was not sure after seeing her swim once there was an improvement
