Topic Dog Boards / Health / Think she may be diabetic?
- By MandyC [gb] Date 16.03.09 10:36 UTC
One of my Rottie girls is already hypothyroid (diagnosed about 18 months ago) and i am now concerned she has developed diabetes, saturday she wanted water all the time, yesterday she was looking in buckets and crying at the tap for water even though she had already drank loads, she had 4 accidents yesterday too which she doesnt do. Not cystitis as the weeing is not small and often it is buckets!

Just looked into her eyes and she has the early stages of cateracts developing in both eyes so i am now worried she has 3 signs which could point to diabetes. Think this may of been brought on from the effects of the thyroid disease or medication. Also concerned it could be renal problems, though she seems well in herself. She will be 6 in june

I am off to the vet this afternoon and will take a pee sample with me, just hoping my suspicions are wrong :(

I feel like it nevers rains but it pours!!!!!

Extra drinking may just be that  her thyroid meds need altering, our (late) Rott had that as one of the first and main stmptoms that she was Hypothyroid.
Good luck at the vets.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply, just got back and all bloods are normal, she had her thyroid levels checked a couple of weeks ago and they were all normal too, have sent off urine sample for further analysis. Clinically she is normal....but something is obviously wrong, we have to wait for the urine results and take it from there.

It's hard as i am glad there is nothing major wrong but at the same time it is frustrating to have no answer for her problem...hopefully we will get to the bottom of it.
