- By mandypandy [gb] Date 08.03.09 20:00 UTC
Hi

My baby is due to have her puppies any day soon, I think it may even be tonight, at present she is panting and her nose is runny, otherwise she seems ok, my worry is that she hasn't nested anywhere is this anything I should worry about!

Many thanks
Mandie

Mandie
Have you read the book of the bitch?
- By mandypandy [gb] Date 08.03.09 21:25 UTC
Yes, shes off her food and a bit restless and had a clear discharge today, her temperature is 37 degrees. Should I be looking for any other signs?

Thanks for the help :)

then she could be geting ready is this day 63??
have you been taking temp for awhile ?? how long as it been since it dropped ?
as she been shivering yet?
or sick ( not all will be sick )
but they do tend to nest ...could be that she will nest soon :) xx
- By JeanSW Date 08.03.09 21:30 UTC
Mandie - sorry love, but you should have read this book and studied it inside out BEFORE your bitch was mated.  Do you have a mentor?  Do you know how to deliver a pup if you have a breech etc.?
- By mandypandy [gb] Date 08.03.09 21:31 UTC
Yes, I know all of that, I have read it but I do not my own copy of it at the moment :)

She has been shivering, but has now stopped. She hasn't been sick and will take a bite of a treat, we started taking her temperature on friday. I'm probably being over-cautious i know but i'm just worried that she hasn't shown any signs of nesting, do you know why this may be?

Thanks x
- By white lilly [gb] Date 08.03.09 21:48 UTC
she will start nesting some dogs dont go mad it can just be the odd dig and stop and some go mad at it :) ....has she had the runs yet ? when her temp drops it has to saty down for a good few hours ..this is how my girl went ::::: morning her temp was low ...afternoon ...up ....night low ...morning low ....afternoon up ...teatime low night time low 4am low lunch time slightly higher then 2pm that day 1st pup ...so as you see the temp is only something to go by if you do it at reg times :) it does go back up before whelp ..

you will know if shes taking treats she may be only just starting and it could be tomorrow night , i tried mine with stake :) she wouldnt eat it at all ...not even sniff it and still didnt have 1st pup till 7hours after that ..xx
- By mandypandy [gb] Date 08.03.09 21:55 UTC
Yes she had the runs a few days ago, temperature is as you described I am currently her temp twice a day. Shes a bit settled now, thanks for the advice with treats also as she does like her food, will post if anything changes.

Many thanks for your help, white lilly :)

Mandie and millie :)x

- By mandypandy [gb] Date 08.03.09 22:13 UTC
Thanks we will keep you updated :). No we haven't had her scanned the vet says it would be a waste of time and to just see what she has, it will be like a suprise :). Well i'm off to bed now. Thanks for all of your help :D. x
- By white lilly [gb] Date 08.03.09 22:19 UTC
your well come :)  make sure she stays with you xx

My girl didn't 'nest' at all. Then the day she was due,she came upstairs at dead on midnight to tell me.She's not allowed upstairs, and opened 2 doors to get to me,then woke me up,panting in my face!1st pup arrived 8hrs later, don't worry about her not nesting, when she starts put her in the whelping box and after all the mess and goo has gone, she should be happy to stay there with her babes.
- By briedog [gb] Date 08.03.09 22:52 UTC
out of intest why did the vet say it was a waste of time to scan the bitch
- By mandypandy [gb] Date 09.03.09 11:08 UTC
Brother-in -law best friend is our vet he basically said don't waste your money just wait and see if she's pregnant and let nature take its course. Just take her after whelping to get checked over and obviously keep number to hand if there are any problems during whelping.

many thanks
mandie :)

Hi quick up date, things have started to happen , very heavy panting ,refusing all food and treats contractions have started and constant shivering. She keeps wanting to sit and lie by dad of puppies is this normal and should I just leave ?

Many thanks
Mandie :)
- By gembo [gb] Date 09.03.09 11:26 UTC
Oh how exciting, looking forward to hearing how many pups you get!
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 09.03.09 12:12 UTC
Don't leave her at all!!!!!!!!!

If she is cuddling up to your other dog it's because she wants reassurance, but be aware that male dogs don't normally do puppies ;-) There are the exception of course, but you may have to separate them once she really starts. He could attack them. Or mum could attack him in order to protect her young.
- By lillymum [gb] Date 09.03.09 12:39 UTC
no please dont leave her she may need your help

my gave birth yesterday only two but the first was breach and needed help

goodluck hope all goes well
- By Crespin Date 09.03.09 13:39 UTC
Hope all goes well, time for sleeplessness to start.  It does get easier to deal with though, the no sleep that is.

Dont leave your bitch, she may need your help.

Post updates when you can!
- By JeanSW Date 09.03.09 14:18 UTC
Mandie, I would suggest that you remove your boy.  Your girl will then turn to you for reassurance.  If you do have problems that need your intervention, it is going to be more difficult with another dog in the way.  And, in an emergency, you need to act, not waste time in chasing your boy off.

I don't even let boys sniff the pups!

And if you left them alone, and she whelped with the dog, you do realise that she would be post partum mated?

You need to be there to reassure her all the way.

>and she whelped with the dog, you do realise that she would be post partum mated?

That's the first time I've ever heard of that with dogs.

I have, and I'm told that it's common practise with puppy farmers.
- By mandypandy [gb] Date 09.03.09 14:59 UTC
Hi all just to let you know Millie is the proud mum of 4 girls and 1 boy, she hasn't passed the last placenta so vet has instructed me to wait another twenty minutes and then i may have to take her along to see him.

Many thanks :)
Mandie

>I have, and I'm told that it's common practise with puppy farmers.

That's fascinating - I'm always keen to learn new stuff! Could you point me towards scientific links about it (not the puppy farmer stuff, of course - the post-partum mating!) because I can't find any reference to it either in the vet books I have or on the net.
- By gembo [gb] Date 09.03.09 15:18 UTC
Yeah!! Congratulations & well done Millie!! How is she?
- By lillymum [gb] Date 09.03.09 15:42 UTC

I am sure that they will all be fine.  Well done to you both, and congratulations!  :-)
- By mandypandy [gb] Date 09.03.09 17:32 UTC
Hi all back from vets , she has given Millie two injections one for placenta and some antibiotics as a preventative for any pending infection otherwise she is great, a very loving mum.
A big thank you to all of you for your support and guidance over the past few days !

Manidie, Millie & 5 healthy pups :)
