Does Jolleys sell animals?  Including dogs and cats?  Theres one opening locally and just wondering do I really want t go and have alook round as if they do sell puppies I won't be able to go or I will not be a "peaceful" protestor... :(
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 06.03.09 08:54 UTC
Not in the one near us - they used to sell small animals about 15 years ago, but no longer (unlike PAH). Certainly no puppies or kittens. They're just a food and supplies store now.

Thanks, I thought it might have been an "in the past" situation.  I know the are cheeper then PAH for alot of things so might wander over for a look and see if there are any nice toys.  Been looking at their website and some fact sheets and very impressed about the one Re Puppies. (Compleatly un-biased and mention both pedigree dogs with KC papers or crossbreeds from rescue....fantastic!)

The nearest jolleys to me (crew hill) does sell puppys from what i can gather they sub let a area of their shop to what they call the nursery where they have pups cats and all other sorts of small animals, they also have a small shop within the shop that does snakes and reptiles. This way jolleys dont actually sell the animals and i would imagine if anything was to go wrong jolleys would have nothing to do with it.

There is a Jolley's 5 minutes from where I live (West Denton, Newcastle) and they do not sell any animals at all, and never have done since they opened many years ago.

There are 3 branches reasonable close to me and none of them sell puppies or kittens. I think one sells gerbils and hamsters and the others only sells fish.  They usually have a massive range of food and are generally cheaper than PAH.

Lat time I went to Crewes Hill Jollyes, the pet department   had a variety of different size puppies ,kittens & other small furries. The larger puppies are in small pens which have plastic on the front of them.I have seen German shepherds,Staffies,Rotties,Labs, spaniels, westies, terriers etc.Six years ago when we were there( buying pet supplies) a couple came out and asked us if we knew where they got the dogs from (I presume puppy farms),they had asked the gentleman in charge about a Doberman puppy for sale for £700,wanting to know if they could see the mother or the paperwork for the puppy,as their dog had died. The more questions they asked the more the  gentleman got verbally agressive,so they had left.I advised them to go to a breed club to find a puppy. We have been up there on & off since but OH has banned me from going anywhere near the puppies as I get upset at the fact that they are stuck in a small cage with kids banging on the front, adults leaning in and some of them actually annoying the puppies,I want to let them out and take them all home!!!!!!!also Iwant to know what they do with them when no one has brought them as small bundles and they are four/five months old ?

Remeber this pet store from N Ireland and they only sold fish , would love to find one near me as they were cheap on most things , I bought a massive crate  from there for £50.00 and it is still in good nick ...

I have a Jolleyes store very close to me, I hardly visit there though.
When they first opened down here, I took my aunt and she is a complete animal crackers, she had a good look around and found a piece sectioned off saying 'staff only', she peeped around the corner and saw several birds, guinea pigs and rabbits that had either broken wings, legs, or pregnant.

We was so angry at our find, as they was all in a dark room, with no one actually nursing them :(

They still sell birds, guinea pigs rabbits and fish at our local store, but I have never seen cats or dogs.

My aunt did report her find to the RSPCA

We have a Jollyes near to us, (Milton Keynes), the only livestock they sell are fish.
I think they have a wider range of pet supplies, and are cheaper, than PAH.

One near me in Manchester and nope, they definitely don't sell animals there either.

If you or anyone else you know sees or hears of anything that is out of order such as puppies sold sick or died, paperwork incorrect, vaccination that is suspect, conditions of premises, anything  re Crews Hill that you think maybe not acceptable then please contact me either pm on this board by my email puppyalert@btinternet.com or through my web site puppyalert.googlepages.com

If there are other premises that are of concern then any info would be helpful and appreciated please

For anyone that is interested BBC Inside Out (London) this Wednesday will feature Hot Dog Kennels, Dobe Farm Wickford, Essex who is contempt of court for selling sick puppies, questions ask of Chelmsford Council why they renew her Loretta Toye (Bastin) pet shop licence year after year when sick puppies are still being sold.

My local Jollyes do sell puppies, kittens, all rodents, birds, snakes, and all sorts.
They are all vastly overpriced and sometimes the puppies are in the cages until they are quite old.  They stay there until they sell.
The RSPCA seem top think this is ok
- By lel [gb] Date 08.03.09 12:17 UTC
Who are these people that sell to a shop? It makes me mad
and as for the RSPCA- no surprises there then
- By pugnut [gb] Date 08.03.09 16:53 UTC
Well thank goodness they dont sell puppies and kittens at the Waterlooville branch. I go there for bits and pieces and the odd collar, they sell rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents, fish and birds but thankfully not anything else.

I never knew other branches sold them, Im quite shocked at that actually. Although I think our local councils (Portsmouth and Havant) dont allow the sale of kittens and puppies in shops. Though there was a pet shop in Cosham years ago that sold kittens.

I wish the government would just stop all pet shops, all over the country, selling puppies and kittens. At least then that would be a chunk of money taken away from puppy farmers. Though no doubt they'd still get plenty of trade from unsuspecting, uneducated people.
