Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / When should mum stop sleeping with pups at night?
- By Traceyc [gb] Date 06.03.09 11:53 UTC
Hi, just wondering when mum should stop sleeping with pups at night? Pups are 4 and a half weeks old now and are only feeding from mum about 4 times in the day. Just wondering if anyone can give me any advice as this is my first litter. Many thanks.

Whenever she chooses. I never restrict mum's access to her pups other than for an hour after she's eaten, to stop her regurgitating for them.

I don't restrict mine either.  I do make sure there is an escape route ie a cage set up next to the puppy pen for her to hop up onto and off into the rest of the kitchen, but I would let her decide when she no longer needs to sleep in with them.

Same here, I do not restrict my girl from leaving her babies, she has been a brilliant mum in the past and will always rush back if she feels the need, and she seems to have a built in clock that tells her when pups are ready to have their milk bar!
Good luck with your pups xx

Same goes here, I don't restrict my girls access to her pups and she can hop in and out of the puppy pen as and when she chooses :)
