Topic Dog Boards / Health / Lost tooth

I've noticed that Oscar has lost a tooth from the top row at the front. It looks like it has completely gone as there is just a little pink hole with some dried blood. I can't see any signs of a broken tooth left behind. I've no idea how/when he did it.

He is fine in himself, there is no swelling or redness and he is eating and drinking normally. Do I need to get him checked by the vet?

Copper broke a tooth (half of it still in his mouth) and I just left it but when I was at the vet for something else she gave me a right old telling off, saying I should have had it looked at.  Well after she did a good check of his mouth he had to have 6 teeth out!  Bit costly but the dog can't say he's got toothache I suppose.  I'd just keep an eye on it and if the dog seems fine get the vet to check it next time you're in.

Thank you copper girl.

I think his booster must be due soon so I'll get it checked out then.
Thanks again :-)

If a tooth is broken, and not fallen out completely, it can be very painful for the dog. It's exactly the same as it is for us. The difference is the dog can't tell, and will get on with life anyway.

I'm pretty sure the whole thing has come out but I'll pop to the vets to get him checked over - thanks :-)

I went to see my vet this morning.
Apparantly there was still bits of tooth in the cavity which will need removing and he's also got antibiotics to prevent an infection. She did say that if we left it, chances are it would be fine, but that there was a risk of bone infection which just wasn't worth running.

So thank you both for your advice :-)
