Hi, Just wondering whether anyone can give me some advice about weaning my 4 week old puppies. How often should mum still be feeding them? They are not interested at all in the soaked eukanuba puppy or puppy meat with lactol, any ideas? Been trying for 3 days now and still no luck. Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am no expert but recently posted a similar issue with my pugs. Fortunately a breed expert reassured me. I started weaning at 3 weeks, didnt expect much but started getting worried at 4 weeks when still no interest. At 4 and a half weeks they just started to eat! I used Royal Canin starter with a bit of nature diet puppy soaked with warm water. Warming the naturediet got them interested initially now they are all on dry Royal Canin only and only feed off mum once a day and that is mroe for comfort.

I don't know your breed but certainly in my case Gwen reassured me it is normal for pugs to wean later and she was right. Perhaps speak to someone specific to your breed for reassurance. Good luck x

I have always started weaning by giving the pups soaked puppy food until it is like porridge from a spoon - literally as you would feed a baby - I have never seen the point in starting off by giving them raw mince or whatever unless you are going to raise them on a barf diet. If your litter is to be weaning on a dry complete then start with it - start as you mean to go on type of thing.
Feeding from a spoon (and scooping it back into pups mouth when he inevitably spits it out) really does work. Some pups will only need this for a couple of days before they will take it from a plate independantly.... others (in my albeit fairly limited experience ) can take a couple of weeks.

I love weaning puppies ..it is time consuming but I enjoy watching them enjoying thier food all over thier faces and feet and the excitement when they see you coming with thier food dish.

I soak with water then add lactol in the beginning I use a saucer with a spoonful of food on I hold the pup between my knees and put some food on my finger under thier nose when open thier mouth  I pop it in gradually holding the saucer nearer the pup then eventually they learn to lick and bingo

Hi guys, thanks for all your advice. This morning I soaked the eukanuba with warm water, added butchers tinned meat and when was still a little warm i offered to the pups - some licked the edge of the bowl and some had it off a spoon just a few licks and some ate more than others, but at least its a start. Kept mum out for 3 hours before and let her in straight after they'd finished. Thanks.
