Topic Dog Boards / Health / Remove Dew claws or not?

Hi, my pup has not had her dew claws removed, I just wondered, should they be or not? Surely this is a bit like tail docking? Is it classed as a no no to still have them in the show ring or is it just preferrential?

Dew claw removal has nothing to do with the showring it is to avoid the vestigial nail being torn off in later life, a painfull and unpleasant condition.
Having said that, many dogs live happily with them and, other than remembering to cut them ( to avoid curling inward), they may give no problem.

In your case, however, it is too late. Pups need to have them done no later than 3-4 days.

Like tooolz has already said it's too late now.  But try to remember to trim the claw often as it has been known that people forget and the claw grows/curls into the leg.

Yes well I just wondered what the protocol was really, my two boxers had theirs removed and I can see why theirs might have been torn off should they have been left, but my lil pug didn't have hers removed. She isn't anywhere near as completely bonkers as the boxers so I can't see them being a problem on her. I just wondered if there was an opinion other than for medical reasons and whether more had them removed than not really, I wasn't going to have Miley's removed.

Yes thanks, I wasn't thinking of having hers removed, I just wondered. :)
And I do check them regularily for curling too :)

I think removing dew claws often depends on the breed.  I used to have mine removed on my toy breeds, but don't any more.  My Border Collie has them, and they are lovely and tight, and he uses them very adeptly as thumbs.  My Bearded Collies however, have big flappy things, and I have lost count of the number of times my youngest has ripped hers.  I definitely wish that they had been removed at a couple of days old.
