sorry this is a tricky one trying to explain, but here goes. . . puppys now 5 1/2 weeks old, mum been fed up with them for a while now.
She's never been a good drinker & i posted a while back about her milk drying up.
Her back 2 teats (by back legs) aren't really teats, like the others have nipples, these 2 r just filled with milk, no actual nipple.
Just one side of her is really swelled up & is nearly by her knee, (so the last 2 nipples on her left side) is this normal (ish)or does she need to see the vet?? only hesitating about seeing the vet cause my last 2 visits have cost £100 each one!
hope i didnt lose anyone along the way!!!

The back milk glands are very often lop-sided at this stage in lactation and as long they are neither hot nor passing yellow/pussy milk and  the bitch is otherwise well - and you have no other worries then I would think all is well.
The weaning process often teeters on the brink of mastitis unless you allow bitch and pups to wean at their own pace. We feed the pups and hope the milk dries up a pace but sometimes there is excess milk.

If you are at all worried -go to see your vet, mastitis is a bacterial infection of the milk gland and needs immediate treatment.

To recap: Symptoms are: bitch drinks excessively, seems dull/ lethargic, coat 'staring', milk gland/glands  hot red and not giving milk, when squeezed often contains greenish thick 'milk'.

yep, just milk, goes to a small point where the milk comes out, pups don't really use these, prob because there is nothing to get hold of really, this is hard explaining!! Right i had been keeping her away from the pups, (well putting her coat on so they couldn't feed much) let her in b4 without coat, the swelling has gone down, still a lot more droopy on one side, but yes smaller. pups just don't like this nipple cause its not really there.lol

No, not hot, when squeezed milk squirts out, bitch WON'T drink at all (really hard trying to keep up her fluids).
Thanks, just needed reasurrence, will keep my eye on them (they look so wierd)
Thanks 4 quick response

Droopy that's all...... well I know all about that :-)

Keep an eye peeled but the glands will go back up quicker than you think.

If she's reducing her milk production don't worry about getting too much fluid into her now..just let her choose.
