Hi there, my 11 month old springer Olli, found a cooked chicken on the Beach on Sunday morning, he did manage to eat a bit of it and had a bone in his mouth but we got that off him.

Since Sunday night, he has been very loose with his poos, and today it is just like water that is coming out of him, he is not passing any blood, hasnt been sick, full of life, drinking plenty but only picking at his food.

His poos this morning were starting to return to very soft, but thicker than the water he was passing before.

Yet I have just had him out and I thought he was having a pee until I looked and it was just a load of yellowish water that he passed.

I am not sure if I should take him to the vets or let the chicken and bugs pass through his system???

Any advice would be gratefully received.

have you fed the dog anything else since he ate the chicken or are the watery bowel motions down to that alone?

Since he ate a bit of the chicken, he has had a bit of paddywack which was Sunday afternoon which he woofed down, hes had a rawhide chew and his normal food, which he is just eatting little bits of, but if you offer him something else he will eat!!!!!

It is definitely best to take your dog to the vet a.s.a.p.  My initial question was to understand better whether the dog may have an intenral blockage, i.e. subsequent food could not be digested, or whether this was a problem due to infection or possibly a tear in the GI system due to a shard of bone.

TBH regardless of any of the above, a full examination by your vet is the safest and ultimately most important next step.

if poos are still soft and because of risk of infection from eating chicken that could have been containated etc then IMO a visit to vets is necessary along with a few days of no food and slowly easing on to a bland diet like chicken/fish and rice. this was advised by our vet when Khan had similar problems (although we couldn't work out what he had eaten exactly) but he will pick up anything given a chance. He made a good recovery after 2 days of no food, a bland diet and antibiotics.
sometimes now i often swap a few kibble dinners for a chicken/fish rice dinner.

Hi all and thank you for advice.

Vet said Olli is ok and that its more than likely the chicken and bacteria that are causing his problems.

He has to get starved for 24 hours then he has to get chicken and rice, just a tablespoon amount upto ten times today then five times tomorrow increasing the amount he gets.

He was very quiet last night and slept a lot, which for him is very un-normal:-)

We took him out last night for his last walk before ben, kept him on the lead so we could keep an eye on him, when we returned, we noticed that he had something in his mouth, had a look and it turned out to be a bit of STILTON cheese, dont have a clue where he got it.

His poos today seem to be starting to get a bit more texture to them, (sorry only words  could think of)
He is a lot better in himself from last night.

My only problem now is how to stop it happening again?  I dont like keeping him on the lead all the time, as I feel he does need a good run to burn off his energy, I thought about putting some kind of muzzle on him, but would this be safe to do when hes off the lead???

We have a Lab to and hes never been a walking dust bin so I am not sure what to do to stop hi, eatting everything.

A quiet Springer - now that is worrying! :-D

Mine eats the most unsuitable unsavoury things he can find too. Anything from a sun dried frog (which was toxic!) to a crispy dead stoat! Bleeuurrghhhhh! He also has a terrible passion for chocolate and finds wrappers wherever we go. He even stole the hamsters chocolate drops last week, and the week before that he stole a packet of chocolate buttons out of a visitors handbag!

I've tried teaching him to give me food on command so if he picks up anything he shouldn't have I can get it off him - but I'm not having any luck.
I've seen a lady round here who walks her Cocker Spaniel with a muzzle because he eats dog poo otherwise. He always looks quite happy and comfortable with it although it does upset his owner when people assume he's a viscous dog.

Thats the only thing that puts me off the muzzle idea, as you said people will think the dog bites.

Ollis never bitten, but at the end of the day its for his own good, I have never been so worried about him like I was last night, my only problem is what type of muzzle?

I looked in the pet store today but, the ones they had wouldnt allowed him to drink or pant by the looks of it and when I asked the assistant she didnt know!!!!

Least I know now it seems to be a normal behaviour for springers, hes come out of bushes with slices of bread before, dead animals likes rabbits! cheese, apple cores and he bunker surfs, which is funny to watch:-)

He a walking dust bin, but I wouldnt change him for anything:-)

Mine ate a human poo in the field last week! I was horiffied!  He was fine though :-)  Hes eaten something yesterday and was sick last night and this morning, hes on chicken and rice for a few days now too.  I dont think theres much you can do about dogs eating things they find, I think thats just dogs for you.

Daughter used to have to put a muzzle on her Rott as she would walk round the forest practically sucking in rabbit poo like a hoover .
The best one is a baskerville plastic mesh sort as they can puff and pant, Widget even used to go in the river with it on, (had to keep her on lead as she would chase/bundle anything that moved) but she would swim round ok in it.

We had a springer many years  ago,and i always remember him finding a large flat fish in the hedge when he was running around,we tried in vain to get it off him,but he just ate it as fast as he could, bones in all.
we watched him for a few days after,but there was no ill efects thank goodness.

When we were walking on the moor a couple of months ago,one of mine shot off down a small track,i saw she was eating something and like yours it was human poo,tissue as well.
Dogs are so disgusting,mind you so are some people doing that.

my springers babies 8months old pups are the same ....sadly 1 died from eating grapes :( and the other ended up at the vets for 3nights on a drip ,he was so poorly hed eaten somthing where his new owner walked him ...vets thinks it may of been duck poo ??? as she walked him around some ponds ....
my poor little lilly ,when she died her owner had given her some grapes to eat (she didnt know thay were deadly for dogs) well she would jump on to the side where the fruit was and eat all the grapes she did this all the time from her haveing her..she was only 5months and this append 5days before xmas ...

luckly my girl dont eat snything now but she did when she was a pup .

Morning all,

Advice needed again, Olli was starting to get better durn the week, poo's were starting to get a bit better.

Yesterday morning and again this morning we have gotton upto poo's on the carpet, it is not runny like the water he was passing before when he first ate the chicken, it does have some texture to it and it thick, (looked like a cow pat on the floor) sorry trying my best to describe it!!!!

It looks like ive mushed up his food watered it down then just poured it on the carpet!!!!

He is well in himself, running around, playing, cold nose, drinking plenty and always looking for food, the only propblem is that he is starting to look very thin around the back end.

Could this still be the side effects from the chicken??? that was a week today that he ate it!!!!!!

Should I starve him again for 24 hours then give him the rice and chicken for two days, or should I take him straight back to the vets?

has your vet tested for campylobacter ,this is a bug that lives in the gut and can be got from bad meats and other things ..id go back to your vets and ask about it ...
